Hey all,
I need a scope for my M16. Going to Kuwait real soon so time is not on my side. Anyone able to offer any good brands that wont kill my wallet? Something tactical, tough and 3X-8X zoom, mil dot or crosshairs that will hold up to desert conditions?

Thanks in advance,
D

In the world of optics, the words tactical, tough, and cheap are rarely seen together. If you're talking about mounting on the carry handle, I would stick to your basic Trijicon ACOG. It's 4X, has a tritium ranging reticle, and is very rugged.

By the way, doesn't the Army give you stuff like that?

Stick with low power. You have a much better advantage up close and personal with the ACOG than you would with a powered scope on top. You can shoot both eyes open with the ACOG. I have the trijicon reflex mounted and love it! I wouldn't scope it.

Have you looked at the new Leupold for the AR-15? Pricey, but when your betting on your life the price to sit at the table are high!

Thanks for the reply's.

CraigZ, the Army only gives the good stuff to certain fields (Special forces, some rangers). My unit doenst even have the M4's yet, still waiting on production. So rather than just wait for the Army to give me the best it has, I asked my Commander if I can get a scope. Since I am a decent shooter already (plus I have a M203 attached under my M16A2), it will only make life easier for me.

Gadget54, I like the Leupold CQ/T but not at $900. If I sucked at shooting then sure it would be a great investment, but I just want to sharpen on what I alread have. Anything within 300-400 meters is pretty much dead when I am layed on tight, but when your searching for the top of someones head, then a high power scope would be great.:D

You guys know where I can find it at a good price???

Thanks again!!!
Dan

UPDATE......
I just looked at the ACOG line, frick...there are 20 different versions....which one you guys recommend and where to get one as everyone is out of them??????????

Try SWFA.com for scopes. They are one of the best, huge inventory. Call them on the line and they will help as much as anyone can.

Premierreticle.com is good for Leupolds. They stopped producing the VariX-III (I am pretty sure)_and now only do the VariX-II. There are a lot of 3.5-10X tacticals out there that are under $500.00. Premier reticles actually installs the reticle in the tubes so you can custom order a scope you like with the turrets and power.

I would go with something lit and low power if I were to 'scope' a battle rifle. The lit reticle will help you in CQB like a red dot. Remember the power will hinder you even at 25 yards, making it hard to find the target, and always set it at the lowest power unless you are ranging on something. Be prepared for the fast shot and take your time on the rest.

How about a scout scope or a shotgun scope? These can be had around $200 for quality. Low power and usually thick reticles for easy close range stuff.

As far as mounting goes I would make it a takeoff mount or tape the wrench to the stock or in the handle. The scope will become the weakest part of your rifle. You may need to get it off quick.
