Looks more like a butchers steel for trueing up an edge, my guess would be it's a piece from a carving set. I seem to remember seeing something like this from @Jack Black at some point in time...

For comparison, here is a picture of a couple of late 19th century smallsords. The one on the right is apparently German.

I tried to look closely at the guard.
Bit blurry close up on the phone though.
I came up with some interpretations of the picture but they were pretty out there even for me.
;)o_O is it a saint ?

Perhaps a German Hunting Sword?
Here are some examples:

The hunting swords and smallswords are pretty similar looking. It definitely looks to me like there originally was a D-guard on the sword r redden r redden posted. There is a hole in the pommel and a space at the top that could be from the crosspiece.

R Redden, what is the cross section of the blade? Is is triangular (aka triquetrous for folks who followed that thread) or is it normally blade shaped? If it is a three sided blade then my guess would be more strongly that it was a court/smallsword, but if it is single edged I would guess it is more likely to be a hunting sword.

WOW, should have fired up the PC and looked at the pics, I think you guys thinking it was a sword are on track now seeing things on a bigger screen.

Good eye!
Can't see so great on my phone screen.

Between you example and the ones posted above, sure seems German in origin.

I thought it may be a broken sword also but in hand it just doesn't look as if it were ever broken or a sword but I could be wrong. It's not in very good condition at all but I thought it was very cool. It is a 2 sided blade with a blood groove. I also thought it looked German in origin. Thanks for the input folks I guess it will remain some what of an enigma. From the level of patina it has and the quality that it once was I could see it being from the 17 or 18 hundreds.
