Anyone know anything about this knife?

My dad bought one of these off of Amazon. Looks cheap, but his is pretty darn sharp and the blade is stamped D2. Supposedly the blade is D2 steel but had an odd finish - kind of rough.

Is it a copy or clone of something else? They are pretty cheap and I was just curious.

Dad isn't a bladeophile so he wouldn't know if it's a clone or what. Heck - I bought a clone just a few years ago and didn't know what it was (just knew it was a cheap pocketknife that I didn't mind abusing).

It's a Chinese knockoff. Looks like an ADV Butcher variety.
Not widely accepted in these parts.
And the Amazon link isn't really accepted either.

It's a clone of an Andre De Villiers Butcher. If you check GB&U you'll see Mr. De Villiers is a bit of an ass, but I don't think that justifies stealing his designs. On the flip side, I do think it's a cool, useful design and it would have been almost impossible for your dad to know. So, in other words, I would encourage him not to buy any more knives from that company, particularly as there are reputable sources for inexpensive pocket knives with D2 steel, but I can't blame him for what he didn't know. Christmas is coming, maybe get him a D2 Steel Will Modus to replace that thing.

We don't support clones here at bladeforums. That is indeed a clone. May not even be real d2 because clones are often fake specs. I'd suggest returning it because it's a clone.

Also remove the link. It's against the rules. You will get warning points.

Avoid eBay and Amazon for knives. Mostly clone junk and fakes. It's really bad.

In my dad's defense, neither he nor I have ever heard of Mr. De Villiers.

I wasn't sure if it was an actual clone or just a cheap knife with possible BS specs on it. I had my suspicions, but it's not my knife and I didn't find out he got it until well after the fact.

I think he wanted something similar to a CRKT Ripsnort. I have one and it's a cool knife, though I'm yet to figure out a real use for it honestly.

I do know a lady on another forum who uses one at football tailgates to slice pepperoni. I'm betting that's a bit *ahem* disconcerting........

Yeah, clones like that can be tricky because even a lot of casual enthusiasts won't recognize specific customs or midtechs. I figured it was done without knowledge or malice. As I said, the Modus has a somewhat similar blade, and Artisan Cutlery also has a few cleaver/wharncliffe type models that are affordable D2 alternatives.

One more question - what is GB&U?

It's the Good, Bad and Ugly section of the exchange. Basically, a subforum to give feedback about buyers, sellers, knifemakers, retailers and manufacturers. If you're dealing with a company, maker or retailer you've never heard of, it's 100% worth doing a quick search there to see what's up with them.
