I heard the man is out of the knife game and later I had that confirmed. Does anyone have a definative factual account of what happened? Religious convert? Crippling injury? Grumpy Wife? Lost his Grinding equipement?
Personally either way I think it sucks hiney, I like his work and wish I could afford more of it.

Ernie has many friends that I am sure know of his situation. I have had some contact with Mr Mayer in the past, but can't presume to speak for him or his family. My understanding however is that there were health problems and Ernie has retired from the public scene.

I hope to see him soon. I have know Ernie for 8yrs almost, He is a man who make a knife for you when the rest said NO,Impossible,to hard. Ernie said Yes. He made 2 of my designs in the late 90's and was about to make some more. My job made it hard for me to get all of the knives done.

I last talked to Ernie a year or so ago. Some physical problems were making it impossible for him to stand at the grinder for extended periods, but he had a couple of apprentices that were still grinding a couple of blades under his supervision. I think it reasonable to report that he is basically retired from grinding blades but is still doing one or two, here and there.

I've handled a lot of really good fighters over the years, and Ernie's are still among my favorites. His third, forth, and fifth generation fighting bowies are awesome. His Sharktooth fighter is my all-time favorite mid sized, and his Super Valerie dagger is exquisite. His grinds are beautiful, and the guy can really balance a piece of fighting steel. Black Cloud knife owners are a lucky group.

The bottom two are made by Ernie.

they are the Mako and Double Time.
Rag Micarta handles on the Double Time and 1/4" of ATS34 steel.

Yes, they are. The top two were my first ones made. Ed Chavar of Chavar Knifeworks did those in late 95 to early 96.I was referred to him by Bud Nealy who he was teaching at the time.

You can see more in the Gallery Forum, just do a search. There are 5 more designs there made by my current maker DMKnives.

I will send you a email. Thanks for the compliment!
