Anyone know of any reputable options for working from home?

I have two little ones with one more on the way and I just can't see putting them in day care while I look for a what is likely to be a low paying and draining job on the outside. I know there are tons of sites that have "work from home" opportunities, but I get cross eyed trying to make sense of them. I figure most are BS and some sort of scheme anyway. So I put it to the community, anyone have experience with this sort of thing or could point me in the right direction?

I am college educated and ran the family business for several years until things got so lean I couldn't keep it up. The proposition for employment around here within my area of study is low right now otherwise I wouldn't be looking.

My cousin works from home in Illinois, and it's completely legit. She transcribes medical prescriptions. Not sure exactly how that works, how much time she puts in, or the educational requirements.

A friend's wife here in New Mexico works for a popular knife dealer that's halfway across the country. Accounting or something. Not sure if she still does that though.

Good Luck

Darn good thread ProGunner!!!
I want to work from home too!!!
It's a waste of time googling it!
I wonder if going to online job sites like Monster.com would do any good?

Is this a business you are looking to start from nothing or do you have some start up money? I think that would make a huge difference in the kind of options you would want to look at.

I've looked at Monster and yahoo and the like and it seems as though most of the work at home stuff they have are ads posted by the folks with the get rich quick schemes or where they want you to buy into their "program". I might have to take out the local Longaberger basket queen and move in on her territory. :)

I am thinking more along the lines of just working for some company for an hourly type of thing. The whole idea of creating another business doesn't set well with me after my last foray into self employment. The mother in law suggested Medical Transcription, but of course that appears to involve some more schooling and right now that isn't in the cards as I see it. I am not looking for something where I can make six figures a year, just supplement the family income while being available for my family at home.

Hmm...sorry can't come up with much if you are wanting to work for another company without any job training. I can understand the hesitance of starting a business because there is more risk involved, but in the long run it sounds as though that better fits what you are looking for. With the internet it is getting easier to start home based businesses.

Sorry I don't have much to add..was hoping I could think of something..good luck in the searching..

It may come down to me having to start something anew, so if you have any suggestions along those lines, please share. Someone else might have the same questions as I do and not have the initial trepidation over starting something new.

If you can make anything that is a bit different than what's out there, it can sell on the Internet. I know a lady that makes little ribbon bows. She brings her supplies to stuff like Scout meetings and she can do them in her sleep. She sells those darn things on the Internet for big money. Makes something like $50 to $100 per hour doing it. I sell my rings that way and my shop rate has evolved to be several times that.

Anything you can think of: bird houses made of beer cans, fancy gift baskets created for specific tastes like movie enthusiasts, or baseball bats carved with someone's name. If you come up with something unique, you can do very well with it. The Internet is unique in that people can search for just such an item, and your customers find you. It takes a little time to ramp up, but is well worth the effort.

How about assembling knives at home?

Maybe some QC as well?

Might ask your favorite knife manufacturer. ;)
