I'll be heading home next month from a deployment in Afghanistan. I have a significant knife collection with me and have been reading a few horror stories about the kinds of things customs will confiscate these days. Supposedly even fixed blades over 6 inches long can be an issue. Anyone come back recently that has first hand knowledge of this?

They told me no autos, unless I took the springs out.No karambits or balisongs were allowed either. I forget what the regs were for manuals and fixed blades, but a friend had his SOG Seal Pup taken by the Navy Customs people. I had all of mine stored in the platoon Connex, took awhile to retrieve them, but nothing was taken. This was 2 years ago, however.

Get the MFR from your Supply/S4 regarding shipping automatic knives home (if not, the customs office will have a generic form that can be updated and signed by your JAG/SJA).

It's barely been a year since I left, and damn near everyone of us had the memorandum on hand when Customs came along.

As for other knives? The only thing they look for is the Hajji knives, which you also need a memorandum for as well. Any knife that was shipped to you from a US Retailer can be brought home - there are no length limitations.
