That's all dependent on what you want out of it, as long as it's not damaged as in cracked, remove the head, soak it in some WD -40 for a few weeks and wire brush all the crappy rust off, as long as there's no serious rust pits, clean it up get a new handle and use it.
After sharpening obviously. If your looking to restore it to perfect... You're results may vary depending on what that rust looks like up close, it may be pretty pitted.
And for the record.... I'm no expert, I have just really liked Hudson Bay pattern axes since I swung my first one 30 years ago.
😉

Thanks for the info! I'm glad to hear it! I've seen many disliking the Hudson Bay pattern saying the design makes the head come loose quicker.

I've had the same CS trail boss since 2008.... Similar in design to the Hudson Bay head... Stock handle and wedge... Other than one bush that I had to chop out of the ground which may or may not have involved contact with the sidewalk, the blade has held an edge and chopped or split it's fair share of firewood and green wood with zero issues.

Looks more like a Montreal pattern to me. They have a deeper eye than most Hudson Bays. Looks like the head's in decent shape based on that pic but the butt end of the handle is pretty banged up and the head may be loose. The handle may or may not need repairs or replacement depending on the extent of the damage and how you intend to use it and your confidence in doing repair work.
