back when i was a teen, i had a friend who went to visit his uncle every summer. i gave him some knives to have sharpened and bring back. the knives came back with the edges polished like a mirror and completely smooth. no hone marks whats so ever. the edge was sharper than i have ever seen a knife, even from the factory. i would like to say that he used some kind of buffer wheel to get the blade that sharp. anyone know what kind of sharpener i am describing?

Well, not having a description makes it tough to figure out what his uncle was using. You can get that result with water stones if you know what you're doing, or if you're like me, you can pick up an Edge Pro Apex, or if you're not scared of power equipment, a 1x30 belt sander with the appropriate belts.

lots of ways to skin that cat.

Oh, and welcome to BF!

i know it was electric not manual. also, the edge looked like it had been buffed because the edge was not flat, it was rounded. kinda like the bow of a boat(looking at it from the top).

seems like it's just a buffing wheel loaded with compound, that can give excellent results.

Did the edge look like this......... disregard the dirt at the edge

Stropped on leather, maybe? Growing up, we had some older fellows in the neighborhood who could sharpen and then strop a knife edge that looked like it came from the factory like that, and they had that slightly rounded "convexed" look.

thx - cpr

yes! looks just like that! convex edge and highly buffed. what do i need to sharpen my knives like that?

you need a set of the paper wheels, a 1/2 hp electric motor and an arbor so you can attach the wheels to the motor. for a convex edge, you need a belt sander and the paper buffing wheel.
