for carrying a knife? How long it can be? I assume one can carry one at all.

Some of you know me as a watch guy and after attending the Custom Knife Show in NYC a few months back I have been itching for a nice Dozier knife :) However I don't want to just leave it at home so does anyone know what is and isn't legal to carry in NYC?

Thanks in advance.

Under 4", whether fixed or folder and it most be worn under your outside clothing. No balis. Hope this helps.

Great to see you here Bill. I hope to see you posting some in the Gadgets and gear section. Especially some of your awesome custom watches.

The blade must be under 4" according to the law. There are a number of Doziers that would fit the bill.

of the watches here. :)

Thanks again for the answers guys! I have to go sell a few watches now to afford one :)

Balis fall under the dangerous weapons category  in NYC, which is prohibited to be carried.

Apparently, gravity knives, switch blades, ballistic knives, metal knuckle knives, cane swords and “kung fu stars” are illegal to possess in NYS, as are daggers, dirks, stilettos, dangerous knives and anything “designed, made or adapted primarily as weapon”.

NYC has additional requirements that the blade be under 4” and the knife must be carried concealed.

You can see the NYS laws on the pdf on the atf site -

There is also some info on NYS and NYC laws on Bernard Levine’s site -

"must be carried concealed"

Does that mean clips are out and it has to be all the way down inside your pocket?

Since pens, cell phones and pagers all have clips (and at first glance could easily be confused with the tip of a knife hilt), I would think that carrying a knife clipped (as I have for the past 3 years in NYC) would be OK. I think the gist of the statute is that unless you're LE or military, not too many people would be comforted by seeing you display a sheathed (or, especially, unsheathed) knife on the street.

I attended a RealFighting.com knife-defense seminar last year at which several NYPD officers were present, and the only concern they expressed was regarding automatic knives and fixed blades. Read that as, "If you use an automatic or fixed blade -- even in self-defense -- and you aren't a LEO, you're going downtown." We were told off the record that if it's a folder with (a) a blade less than 4", (b) a blade that has a somewhat utilitarian (generally non-scary) shape, and (c) a name other than something clearly violent like "The Eviscerator", you wouldn't be hassled.

Welcome Bill. Been looking at your watches very closely lately.

NYS does not consider the balisong as a "gravity" knife with case law to define it, and are legal to carry anywhere in NYS except NYC. The clips are a grey area, and can be used to justify a "stop and search" if you are acting suspeciously. Also, any folder with a loose pivot that can easily flicked open can be construed as a gravity knife, so it's in your best interest to keep the pivots tight. Lastly, it's technically illegal to use a knife in public unless it's part of doing your job.

I've got a hot flash for all of you...Everything is Legal in NYC as long as you don't get caught

If you look like you're looking for trouble, it'll find you.
I'd be willing to bet I could carry any knife I own and never get hasseled. ;)

Good intentions, bad idea Phil. You just never know. Case in point: I was walking down Baxter Street minding my own business when I was stop and questioned. Why? I matched the description of a suspect they were looking for. Nothing happened that day, but it did teach me to try and keep it legal as much as possible. ;)
