Anyone know what type of steel the could be?

Hey all,

I was lucky enough to pick up this custom bowie by Louisiana maker Rudy Wehner. This thing’s a beauty, polished stainless steel blade and a scrimshawed mammoth ivory handle. I read somewhere that Rudy used 440C and ATS34 when he was making knives. The blade had a shiny, almost mirror polish. Any way to tell 440C from ATS34 just by looking at it? Is one shinier than the other? Etc

Yeah, you're not going to be able to tell from sight, smell, taste, or touch.

Don't taste your knives.

IF you have another knife that you know is 440 or ATS, you could try sharpening this and the exemplar knife. If they sharpen about the same, they might be the same steel.

Assuming the heat treat is done correctly.

Assuming the edge bevels are pretty similar.

My experience is that ATS holds an edge longer than 440, but that's just my experience.

Basically, you're guessing: there's no way to tell without metallurgical testing.

Don't taste your knives.

This is completely incorrect. 440c, when heat treated properly, tastes like tart apple cider out of an old metal cup.

Ats34 has an air of oakiness that quickly fades away to a subtle summer zucchini loaf.

Just remember to not bite the knives, a quick lick or two ought to do it!

You unwise fool! , you must first give teh blade a bite first!.
If both steelzz arr harduned propurrly
ATS 34 should feel like biting down on a coin
and 440c should feel like biting on a jawbreaker.

Here's another knife from the same maker, and no, I have no idea what steel he used. It is nice work and the knife is tapered in all directions. This one has the earlier stamp that he used from around 1987-1990. Apparently the original owner was a pirate.
