Greetings all,

If anyone knows where to purchase the rare earth(I believe they are samarium cobalt)gold- plated wonder magnets that Bud Nealy utilizes in his patented sheaths, I would appreciate same. Also, if anyone has any idea as to their actual size and approximate cost. Seems like they would be fun to toy around with when I get around to crafting some kydex sheaths and possibly retrofitting a khukuri sheath for gonzo retention. TIA

Try www.wondermagnet.com

They have all sorts of rare earth magnets, most are nickle plated but some are gold plated...

They have from knife sheath size to the size of a car battery...

Hope I could help, Alan Folts...

You can find rare earth magnets at http://www.leevalley.com These magnets are neodymium and nickel plated but they may be suitable for you. They come in various sizes from .25"x.1" which will hold 2 lb. to 1"x.125" which will hold 35 lb. (Don't get you fingers between the large ones.) Lee Valley also carries cups and washers for for mounting these magnets. The cups can increase the holding force up to four times. The web site also contains a lot of interesting information on magnets and their use.

BTW, the neodymium magnets are stronger than the samarium ones but can not get as hot. The neodymium magnets must not be heated above 150 C (302 F) while the samarium magnets can go up to 300 C (572 F) before they are demagnetized.

I talked to Bud Nealy last year at a show and I'm sure he said the magnets are neodymium.

Gentlemen,

Your assistance one and all, is most appreciated. I will continue to research magnets. Seeing photos of one of Nealy's blades hanging from a sheath by its tip, reinforced in my mind, the practical efficacy of magnets. They seem ideal for retention, without possibly fumbling during a critical release, or worrying about "give_away" noises as in snaps or velcro.

Alan Folts, I can't believe ya missed Spencer's All Points Bulletin a few messages down in this forum.
