Anyone know why...

New Graham has stopped posting prices on Benchmades? Kind of makes looking for them an inconvience. Im sure it has something to do with bulk pricing, but its still a wee bit annoying. Was just wondering if anyone has an offical answer.

I usually just call NGK to order. Nice folks. I tend not to shop at NGK's website because of a relatively limited inventory and an inefficient interface. I use knifecenter.com to scope out knives because they've got everything and it's laid out well. And then I order from NGK. Kind of a jerk like that, I guess.

Though I'm curious about this also...couldn't find their price for a mini skirmish the other day, if I recall.

If I remember correctly, there's a minimum allowable advertised price set for some models. Such knives can be sold for less than that price but not advertised at that price per the manufacturer. I see the same thing in some electronics catalogs. If anyone has more specific knowlegde on it I'm sure they'll post it.

The Knifecenter does the same thing, as well as others. It seems to be only "official dealers" (get their stock direct from Benchmade I think, not a 3rd party distributor) who have this policy. I am not sure if only official dealers are bound by the MAP, or if it's just coincidence that only official dealers get low enough prices that it is even an issue. I would imagine that legally only the official dealers could be held to it.

Other things have a MAP too (minimum advertised price), but it's not the kind of thing a manufacturer lists on consumer sites (if you knew the MAP, that almost ruins the whole thing because you know to keep shopping around for less). There was recently a big issue with CD's having something like that, and I think (don't recall for sure) they got into legal trouble because multiple production companies were accused of conspiring to agree on MAP prices.

Authorized BM dealers cannot post prices. It is part of the agreement with BM who for some reason feels it is necessary to leave people wanting their knives in the dark until they can find out privately what kind of a dent it will put in their wallet.
