Anyone know with certainty why the Raindrop Damascus has changed so much?

Hi guys! First of all I'm not trying to start and huge post about which Raindrop Damascus look people like better, everyone has their own personal preference and that I completely fine. I, personally, love the older, uniform look that got so popular on the older Regular Sebenzas. IMO, nothing can beat a Large Regular "plain jane" with that dark and beautiful Raindrop Damascus. Then they switched to the Classic then 21 and until about the end of 2012 all was the same until I ordered a large 21 with Raindrop Damascus directly from CRK. I opened the box and immediately thought something was wrong. I jumped on the phone to call Angela and told her that the blade was defective and they were happy to pay for return postage and give me a full refund.
However, about 5 days later Angela called me and told me that was not a defect but their "new" Raindrop Damascus. I was floored. It looked so much different and more spread out than the previous, I couldn't believe it. So does anyone know for sure why they made the change?
I was told that it had to do with the amount of "bars" it took to make the older style versus the "newer" style. If you look closely at the first style you can clearly see a 5 bar set up. It is uniform, you can see each individual raindrop and it is quite beautiful and my personal favorite CRK Damascus. However, I was then told that with their "new" style Raindrop damascus it was composed of a 3 bar design and this makes sense as everything is no longer uniform but far more spread out and a lot "looser" than the previous design.
To some of the newer collectors they may not even be aware of the change but to some of us older collectors it simply can't be missed. I will always love CRKs "older" Raindrop design and it saddens me that they did make the change. Also, when I say "they" I am not sure if it is a product of Devin Thomas or Devin Thomas with CRK's instruction. So I took it upon myself to look up some of Devin Thomas' available damascus and his Raindrop damascus that he offers directly looks exactly like the "older" style of CRK Raindrop Damascus. So once again I am reaching out for answers. I will post a few a few pics of the "older" style via a knife that I recently parted ways with, but thankfully it went to a great new home and now resides in the Wolfe's Den :).
Once again, I am not trying to start any sort of debate about which type is more popular, etc. I am just curious if anyone knows for certain why the change was made as it is quite a big difference when you look at the two quite closely. As always, thank you all for your input and I am very interested to hear if anyone knows for certain why the change was made. No matter what I will NEVER stop loving CRKs until God feels that it is time to take me off of his great green earth, I am simply curious as to why the change when the Ladder and Basketweave were not affected. Thank you for your time and God Bless.

for certain? no

For a guess? I can presume that the tighter pattern costs more, and because opinions vary so much (perhaps equal numbers prefer the loose pattern over the tighter) they went the less expensive route (since either choice would result in the same relative numbers of joys/complaints).

The Ladder patterns that I've seen of late were also "loosened" a bit as well.
My buddy had an old Basketweave Large Reg that was much tighter than current production, wish I would've bought it off of him.

Seems to me that it has been a change across the whole damascus line that they offer and I'll be checking back to see if anybody can say why.

In the Shot Show YouTube interview with Anne Reeve she said they have returned to the tighter pattern in the raindrop and shows an example. Call me strange, but I prefer the random raindrop they were using recently to the very uniform one you describe.

I havent heard/read anything to the reason why the new raindrop pattern is so different. I agree that the older pattern (IMO) was more beautiful. The new one (to me) is just "ok".

What really bugs me is that CRK uses the older patten of raindrop on the handles of their UG/CG lineup while using the new patterned raindrop blade. IMO, that needs to be fixed, because they are NOT the same.

For what it is worth, I agree with you. These guys have nearly perfected pattern welding to the point that they could do portraits in the pattern...but at some point it is so refined that we start to wonder how much man was involved and how much the machine/computer took over. Either way is fine depending on what you like, but there is a certain "romance" to the more random look of a looser pattern.

-says the guy carrying a very tight basket weave at the moment;)

I personally prefer the older tighter pattern. I have one of the newer looser patterns and it really isn't anything special to me, but then I am a ladder fan so....

Makes me miss my Regular Sebenza Damascus even more, Ryan :D

Hope they go back to the old style soon!

It has a great home and makes a very special lady in my life VERY happy. I couldn't be more thankful for your extremely kind gesture and I hope to some day return the favor :).
