I'm interested in finnish knives, and I recently saw a "paja nikkari" puukko. I don't know this maker, and I wonder if someone here could tell me if these puukkos are of high quality like the Lauri or Kampaineen. The asking price and the apparent workmanship suggest that the answer is yes, but I'm not a specialist, so if someone could give me informations, I would be happy.

Is it this?

This is "paja handy"-puukko by Marttiini

or

This is "nikkari"-puukko by Roselli

If you combine names you get "paja nikkari". Name confusion may have happened

Both are handforged carbonsteel puukkos made for wood working. I would not say that these are of same quality in finnish as Tommi-puukkos but are excellent tools for carpenters etc. Of course neither of these are differentially hardened as Tommi-puukkos.

"nikkari"-puukko is available in Rosellis normal carbon steel(I think a little less than 1% carbon), UHC-steel that cost 1,5-2 times as much as normal "nikkari"-puukko (1,5% of carbon -poor mans wootz) and Wootz (1,6% carbon hardness 64-66 RC). Wootz nikkari-puukko is numbered 1-100 and costs about 5 times as much as normal version. Wootz puukos are made by master Heimo Roselli. Staba-san here inBF has one of numbered wootz hunter-puukkos. This nikkari-puukko is sold out as it is not anymore in Rosellis Web-page

In Finland pictured puukkos cost about 1/4 or 1/5 of price of Tommi-puukko.(n 300FIM and Tommi-puukkos start from 1000-1500 FIM)

Do you notice that my name is Tommi

(it is 99th common name for Finnish men) - what a quality name.

Fortunately, it is neither of these, they seem to be hand-forged by a finnish craftsman. Here is a link to a page containing one photo of them, they are on the right side of the page: http://www.fintech-gruppe.de/prod018.htm
Otherwise, do you know an internet site, or another way I could buy tommi puukkos or
lauri ones ? Here in france, they are very difficult to find, and my quest for traditional puukkos is somewhat frustrating.
Regards,
François.

It is unfortunate that after kellam knives bought Kainuun Puukko prices rised 20-30% here in Finland. Store that used to sell tommi puukkos in Helsinki do not keep them anymnore in their stock.
You can buy tommi puukkos and other handmade puukkos from James Mattisis Chai Cutlery (chaicutlery.com). He has now some special deals on Tommi-puukkos(the link is right on the top of his first page). Prices are as cheap or (cheaper in some cases(before VAT and Customs)) as here in Finlad. Some models are now sold out.
Knifecenter has Tommi puukkos at considerable higher prices.

I have looked (drooling) on Tommi T50.

A little information about Tommi- puukko. Our late president Urho Kekkonen (eager hunter and fisherman) considered Tommi-puukko to be the best of all puukkos and had always one in the drawer of his desk.

"paja nikkari" seems to be a nice puukko. I'd say that it is made for woodworking and general utility.
The name "paja nikkari" comes from: Paja that means forge(as for hand forged puukko) and nikkari is about the same as carpenter (my finnish-english dictionary (100 000 words) has no english word for nikkari) So together it meand that this handforged puukko is made for nikkarointi = woodworking and utility.

I guess that this did not help much

Thank you for the informations you provided me. I too feel that the tommi puukkos are very very tempting. If you don't mind, I have another question for you: do you know the kullervo puukkos and the lauri puukkos, and if yes, what do you think of them. I have noticed that both the kullervo and lauri puukkos are marked V.H on the blade, does it mean that lauri and kullervo puukkos are two names for the same knives ?

Smith Veikko Hakkarainen forges both puukkos. Thus VH as Veikko Hakkarainen. You can see the smiths signature also in Tommi -puukkos. Kainuun puukko has more than one smith and the guarantee is valid for smiths life time (I don't remember when did I hear this). Lauri and Kullervo are V. Hakkarainens model names. I have never seen Lauri puukko. Probably different blade lenght or handle type...
