I grew up with Buck knives. I always saw Buck as the brand I could trust no matter what. I have a few lockbacks and sheath knives from Buck but never had one of their slipjoints, I prefer to EDC a slipjoint myself but have always just had Case slipjoints for some reason. Well I decided to get a new pocket knife and I figured Buck has never let me down, so why not try one of their slipjoints? I ended up with a 302, I realized I really only use the clip blade on my pocket knives so I liked the simplicity of the single clip blade. Got it on the 'bay for $20! All I can say is WOW. This might be the best $20 I've ever spent. Great fit and finish, good snap and razor sharp out of the box. It went right into my pocket, where I plan to keep it! Any of y'all like the 302? pictures are always welcome :D

Nice looking knife. I have a couple but haven't used one yet....maybe I should put one in my EDC pile and see how often it ends up in my pocket.

I also like the simplicity of the solo blade and that would work lots of the time for me, but I do find I use a sheepsfoot blade fairly often too.

Thanks for posting the picture!!

While I can see the attraction for some folks, I don't have any use for them. I bought a couple of each when Buck put the "prototypes" on sale (with blades marked 301). I just find that I can't do without the sheepsfoot blade, so none of them get carried. I always have a 301 of some sort in my pocket.

Now, if the single blade had been a wharncliffe, I'm sure I'd like it much better.

I have one of the yellow ones. I like it, however, it hasn't become part of the EDC rotation yet.

nice knives Plumberdv!
I can understand the need for the sheepsfoot blade, they really come in handy when opening those plastic clamshell packages things come in.

That's a beauty.

My thinking has always been that I want a smaller single-blade to be a locking knife like the 112 or 500 and a slippie to have three blades like the 301.

Actually, I find the best slippie to be the Swiss Army style (because it has many more functions).

But......I do see the charm of this compact and tough little knife.

While I don't have one I am a pretty big fan of of Slimline Trappers and whatnot so I think I find it cool in a minimalist kind of way. It should prove to be very easy to carry in the pocket.

thank you. I need a 112, and the whole 500 series...... I just keep adding to my large list of bucks I want! lol

one thing I love about the 302 is even though it's a 3 7/8" long knife, it's thin build makes it dissapear in your pocket

I'm reviving this thread because every time I see a 302, I want to buy it, even though I already have knives similar to it. From these responses, I see folks would like more blades with a slip joint, but I find the 302's sleek design so alluring. It's like a fancy sodbuster or American Opinel.

Do you guys think this knife will get discontinued due to unpopularity?

Yes!
I think the idea for a single blade (old school) 300 series, was overdue. I'm looking for a 302 for my collection. Here's a question. Is there a 302 made, without a date code? I've seen stock catalogue shots with no date code and some with a date code. Let's hear it Buck fans...

I must have missed this thread back in July, possibly because it wasn't 15 below zero like it is right now and I wasn't logging as much computer time. Pretty interesting that so many have stated that they own a 302, yet few EDC them. I'm in the same boat myself. I love the looks and particularly the feel of mine, but it inevitably finds itself spending more time in a drawer rather than a pocket. It is a knife I love to fondle, but don't carry as much (if ever) as I thought I would. I feel the same way about my 55, but that actually gets some pocket time on occasion.

So I am wondering why this seems to be a consensus??

As far as whether or not to buy one, my take is that purely on "classic cool" factors (the antithesis of "tacticool"??) this is a sweet knife to own.

I am going to make a concerted effort to get this one out in the the world a bit more. Mine is yellow, and has felt smoothly worn and weathered since it came out of the box.

Maybe Buck had a reason for calling this the Solitaire??
