How's the cost of livin over there? Is the housing ridiculous, especially around military bases?
Thanks for any info you can give me!!

I live on Oahu. Cost of living is pretty high, but manageable. Housing can vary quite a bit, there's a lot of bases/military housing areas.

If I were a knife maker, I'd probably live on the big island. Land is a bit cheaper there but, everything else is more expensive. Everything that comes into the islands go though Honolulu first then to the outer islands.

Any other questions, LMK.

Not sure about housing, but the scuba off the coast of Kona on the Big Island ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!

Cost of goods is expensive. We stayed in a condo, ate most meals there to save $$$ for fun stuff. While we did save by not going out to eat, it still was considerably more than over here.

There is also "island fever" to contend with. Mainlanders, who are used to being able to drive in all directions for hours, often begin to feel hemmed in by the limited space. I lived on Oahu for four months, and due to my job traveled extensively all over the island. It wasn't long before I was ready to bail. However, there's nothing like waking up to another beautiful day in paradise. And if you like ocean sports, you can hardly find a better spot. Spendy? Yes.
all da best,
rats...

Yep, the cost of living is pretty high, or at least it seems that way when I go back to visit. It also helps to be patient/mellow, because if not "Hawaiian time" is going to drive you crazy. Over here I'm the laid-back ex-islander, but back home I'm the pushy impatient Mainland cousin, so... :)

I just got back from 9 days in Kauai with my wife and 16 month old boy. Stayed in a little cottage on a farm away from the big hotels. A gallon of milk at the big supermarkets was $11. No joke. Most things are about 30% more than in Portland. But raw ahi poke salad was $8 a pound and decent hawaiian shirts were $20 - so there were a few bargains.
