I thought about setting up my personal shop but that's not a good idea since I'm just a beginner. So I decided to "work" for some of my fellow knife/blade maker out here.

I'm looking for a shop (or backyard shop for that matter) that need someone to help out making knife/sword. Even if you don't need help I can just watch and learn if possible. I know very little about knife making so I'll work for free (I'll do anything!). Perferably during the weekend. My goal is to learn to make my first knife someday.

If you are interested reply here ASAP. I'm willing to travel if your willing to help. Thanks alot for helping me out!

Our club NECKA has Hammer-Ins a few time a year. They are held at my shop here in New Bedford Ma. If you would want to come down on a Saturday to get you going you are welcomed. It is a 3 1/2 hour drive.

The scenic route in NYC is only bad if you are in a yellow cab.:eek

Hey lionken07. George has got a good offer there. I've been to his shop and home and he's a hell of a nice guy. You'd also be welcome to come down to our place, weekend or weekday, wouldn't matter. Tess and I both would be happy to show you anything we can. Were about 3 hrs. from NYC. Send me an e-mail if your interested.

Hi lionken,

My name is Mike and I am also a new knifemaker here in NYC. I've actually been setting up a shop in my aparment (much to the chagrin of my girlfriend) and trying to find a way to work around this problem. Basically, so far I haven't found any good solutions. I am actually from the area where Indian George and all the crew in this forum are from and visited IG's shop in New Bedford (he has all the best toys.)

Anyway, I don't know what your finances look like or where you are in NYC, but if you were interested, I have been trying to find a studio space or something similar in order to set up a shop. I have been checking on Craig's List (it's a website) for spaces around the city to setup a shop. Maybe if something comes up and you're interested, we could split the shop costs (I actually have pretty much all the necessary equipment at this point.)

Apart from that, I really don't know where else to point you. I have been looking for the past year and have yet to find any other makers in the city. There are a couple of guys out on Long Island and a fair number in upstate NY, but no one I've discovered in the city. If you get anymore info, let me know.

Mike

I'm a knifemaker in NYC (Check out the avatar ;) )for the last few years and let me tell you , it isn't easy. I don't advise you set up shop in your apt as that would mean some serious exposure for you and your girl to harmful dusts and pollutants. As well, your neighbors will wine and moan about the noise. That is ofcourse if you have machinery. I live in Brooklyn and luckily I get basement usage from my landlord who I am in very good with (hallalujah). I think the next bet would be to look in local neighborhood news papers like the Sunset news, Home reporter, Greenpoint Gazette ? (I think that's what it's called??). You can find some decent deals out here in Brooklyn but it may be a little inconvenient but the way is to go straight to the landlord. You can find better deals if you go straight to an older couple who are retired and just want a little extra $$ every month to suppliment. I have heard there are some great deals in the Bronx right now and that is the next "hot spot" real estate wise. You might check there. I have one friend who got an apartment in the Bronx for dirt cheap recently. You may want to look for a garage for rent or even a tiny store front. Good luck though, space is limited here as you already know. Prices are rising every day. So, hit the streets immediately and break out the blood hounds and sniff out the very few bargains left in NYC. The last and slightly more expensive route would be to find an artist loft that would allow the noise of machinery. You can find something like that like my girl friend has for minimum $500. in Brooklyn, alot more in Manhattan. A little less in Harlem, about the same in Queens and supposedly in the BX you can get a better deal now. If I hear of anything I will post it asap. I will ask my girl, she may know of someone wih a space available. Shoot me an email and we can talk. Take care.....Rich
