i was looking at my altoids tin and i was wondering if any of you have made anything out of them. i know a guy that made a pin hole camera out of one, and i was at a theatre and they made their clearcom switches out of them. if youve made something a picture would be great.

thank you,
nick

I put a JK handmade knives tin knife, house key, lip balm and lighter in mine. And all for only 10 calories!

Some guys on head-fi wire up gadgetry inside of a tin to make a portable amplifier. Always impressed the hell out of me with their clean designs and cool LEDs :D

There was an article in Tactical Knives several years ago about making a pocket survival kit out of one. It included fishing line, a few hooks, a Victorinox Farmer, water purification tablets and some other goodies.

It seemed a little lacking for real survival, but was one of the few articles in Tactical Knives I ever found worth reading.

I saw some plans (maybe in popular mechanics) to build one of the altoids gum tins into a case for a 9V battery and a charging adapter for your cell phone/ipod/whatever. That seemed pretty neat.

I poked a hole at the bottom of an altoids tin and used it as a case for my ipod nano (would post a pic, but it's really just an ipod tin with a hole for the headphones cord). Keeps it from getting scuffed up in my pocket.

As has been stated I've got lots of various kits in all the various sided altoids tins. My new favorite is the sugar free altoid minis, and they come in a tiny tin that I've yet to find anything horribly practical to do with as it's so small. I have one in my edc bag that I keep quarters in, keeps them from bouncing all over in the bag.

Hundreds of people on these forums (mostly over in the W&SS subforum) have spent countless hours trying to jam as many small survival items as possible into one of these tins. Mine currently contains a Vic Farmer, an orange Bic mini lighter, a Photon Microlite II, a liquid filled button compass, a small metal whistle, about 3' of Gorilla brand tape, a couple of birthday candles (some prefer the prank kind that are difficult to blow out), some small strike anywhere matches, several tinder-quik tabs, and a few cotton balls to keep it from rattling. It's not perfect by any means but I'd be very glad to have it if I got lost in the woods. Sometimes items come or go. Some fishing tackle would be a good idea I think. It's held closed by a small velcro strap to keep it from spilling. I put it in a jacket pocket and hardly even know it is there. -DT

here's mine over 50 items anybody have more?

Gum tin carries emergency cash and is tucked into my pack. This is my favorite tin shape.
Small tin has Bag Balm and is held shut by a slice of inner tube
Another small tin contains my micro fire kit
I have 2 fire kits each in a large Altoid tin. One is held shut with a slice of inner tube, the other is completely stuffed inside a piece of inner tube and sealed on both ends for waterproofing. I carry that one in my PFD pocket.

I like the ipod carrier idea.

I honestly think I have a tin fetish. :p
