Anyone make the transition from stomach to back sleeping?

How did you train yourself? Ever get to the sleep where you are literally passed out? If I start out on my back, I dont get into the deep sleep. During the night, I might have my mind awaken and then turn onto the back but I dont get into that deep, dream state. Also, I alternate between hands to the side, hands across the chest and hands on top of the hips - never can seem to get totally comfortable. Even tried a down pillow for tummy sleeping and then changing to a tempur pedic contour pillow for back and still dont get that deep sleep (though neck feels better cradled in the tempur pedic while on the back).

50 years old and I stared sleepin' on my back last November when I went on a CPAP machine for sleep apnea, didn't really start gettin' a good nights sleep till I spent $1,500 on a Tempurpedic mattress.

What a great mattress, I lay down on my back and I'm out cold in 10 minutes, no learnin' curve needed. :)

Got the Tempur Pedic about a year ago, the cloud model. Yes, love it. But I can not get to the deep sleep stage on my back. Maybe just have to tough it out a month or two?

Probably can't help with your back transition but I had all kinds of sleeping issues ranging from numbness in my hands to debilitating sore lower back upon waking. We finally bought a Tempur-pedic mattress and I'll never sleep on anything else again.

I have found that I get my best back sleep after an extremely hard day of physical labor. Otherwise, I wake more often and change positions quite a bit. The great thing about the Tempur-pedic, which you may already know, is every position is very comfortable. :)

When sleeping on your back, what position are your legs in? If you have your legs straight out, that probably isn't good for your back. You might try these two leg positions:

1. Put a pillow under your knees. You can also buy pillows/support that are made specifically for this purpose. It takes the strain off the back.

2. Cross your feet at the ankles, and let your knees fall to the sides. This also will relieve the strain from you back.

Also, try propping your arms to the side on pillows, so that they are more level with your body instead of dropping down to the mattress.

You might even try combining #1 and #2, and cross your ankles/calves on one or more pillows.

Good luck.

I made the transition some years ago. I was having pains in my neck, and sleeping on my front was not good for that.

Try a cervical pillow - the kind that has a hollow spot in the center for the back of your head and a bolster to cradle your neck. Combine that with a pillow or bolster under your knees.

Happy Z's.

Years ago I trained myself to sleep on my back. I usually slept on my side. This was in Memphis, what was called a "transitional" neighborhood. 100 F days, 85 F night. No AC, windows nailed shut. Front door open and a cheap box fan. I trained myself to sleep on my back, uncovered, with my S&W Mod 10 HB at my side. I would fuss around getting everything just right so I could put my right hand out and grasp the revolver instantly. After a couple of weeks, it was scary, a car door would slam and i would come up, awake, revolver in hand. I had read something about Viet Nam and the guys sleeping face down with their 1911 ACP in hand under the pillow. Jeebus, that was an intense period.

yep, I had to after I got my cpap machine also. So now I sleep on my back, usually with one leg at a 90 degree angle under the other leg, with hands inside underwear (on the sides) to keep them there

I aint slept on my back a night in my life, I can only get to sleep if i'm laying on my left side with neck propped up with a firm pillow...I seriously dont know how anyone could sleep on their back.

If your in the 50+ crowd, chances are you don't sleep well, for most older people a good nights sleep is a fleeting thing. When I do get a good sleep it is like a rare gem.

Calcium-magnesium-zinc. Take a couple before going to bed. It seems to relax the muscles and body, and aids in a really good sleep.

Ah yes, check out ZMA. Zinc Magnesium aspartate if I'm correct. It's a natural way to get a deep sleep without the groggy feeling the next morning. You will also have the most vivid dreams of your life.
