Anyone mod a Recon 1 or Lawman?

I spent a few hours running through the impressive modded production knife thread yesterday, and I loved almost everything there. I've been looking at the Recon 1 for a while, but I haven't pulled the trigger yet, and I've heard a lot about the scale roughness and how it tears pants apart. Has anyone done scale replacements or reprofiling? And has anyone done any blade or spine reprofiling? I looked up the Emerson Horseman the other day because of a thread I was reading, and was immediately struck by the handle and blade shape similarity to the Recon 1. Has anyone tried cutting down the back of a Recon 1 blade to make a bargain Horseman? I'd love to see any mods anyone has done. Thanks.

Ive sanded my entire recon 1 down(smooth under the clip) so it's still got grip but it's not chewing my pants apart. After a month of carry and use it shows no wear on my dickies.

A lot of folks sand down the G10 under the clip. I've never felt the need to, but it's an easy thing to do. I've also seen a lot of folks strip the black finish off of the blades, which is also easy enough to do.
There are a few pics of the tanto Recon 1's that have been modified to sort of a drop point. They look real nice.
As for me, I sanded off a lot of the black coating on my Lawman after it started looking pretty raggedy from use. I found that the G10 got a lot less grippy after about a year of pretty consistent carry and heavy use. So it doesn't rip up my pockets at all.

I'm sure other folks will chime in with pics and other cool stuff that they've done.

Nice. Can you post a pic of what the G-10 looks like after sanding? Did you strip the blade down or leave it black?

Iphone and pen light photo's so her it goes

Im very happy with this knife and the sanded down G10. I did it all with 200 grit.

I've stripped the coating and reprofiled it, but never saw the need to sand the scales; I love the coarse g-10 wayy too much!

Cold Steel knives clean up nicely when you put some love into them. Here are a few photos of my modified Cold Steel knives:

Funny you mention the Recon 1 and the CQC 8... here is what Mr. Demko whipped up for me

On my other Recon 1's, I will add a bit of griptape on the spine of the rocker bar (as seen in the pictures), and I will sand down the G10 under the clip, and I will remove the thumbstud and thread a ziptie to emulate the wave function.

Wow, that's some nice work. For some reason I really like the look of the smoothed G-10, I guess it's because I don't often have grip issues. These CS folders really look better without the black coating, it's too bad they don't offer them that way.

Res1cue, that looks awesome. Is that a replacement blade that Demko put in or a modified Recon1 blade?

Just messing around here. It looks like the blades can be swapped with a little dremeling and backspacer mods. Overall I like the AK-47 handle and blade better than the Recon 1 so I'm not going to hack anything up yet. Maybe after I get another AK-47 (I broke 3/8" off the tip of this one) I'll see what it takes to smash a Recon blade in it's handle.

I have a Recon-1 and a large Voyager. I took off the clip and lightly sanded about 1/4" in front of where the clip touches to about 1/4" behind. They both work well now. Total time - about 10 minutes per knife.

Mr. Demko made new blades for two of my Recon 1's (both identical CQC8 blade shape) in CPM 154 hollow ground with a 14" wheel

He also hooked up my D/E waved BM630 with new/bigger screws and a Ti spacer.

I love this. It's like a Super CQC-8, only better.

The only thing that looks troublesome is that massive swedge sticking out while it's closed. I owned a Benchmade Onslaught for awhile, and I had to trade it away because that damned swedge made it almost impossible to carry comfortably.

All things considered though, that is a very nice re-blade. I might send one of my Cold Steels over to Mr. Demko for some VIP treatment.

He is the man.

TheBleedingEdge, the swedge is not a problem to me at all, wave feature works perfectly. Never owned the onslaught, so I can't compare the two
