I've been considering grinding ( without excessive heat build-up) my blade tip on my 119. I want to flatten out the swedge part , as opposed to having an upswept tip, but am hesitating as it may make the tip weaker . Anybody done this , or have suggestions ?

Thanks ,

Pete

( sorry 'bout the kydex blooper)

I've too have thought of doing that but theres not enough metal left . Once a knife becomes a clip point, just that grinding takes much of the metal away inorder to arrive at it . So, attempting to modify that would necessitate removing mostly the entire clip inorder to form another point style . Hence, lossing an inch to inch and a half to get to an area where enough metal is left to form something . If your willing to have something just 4" go ahead and give up your bigger knife . Inorder to do what your thinking it would be best to get some bar stock of top grade cutlery steel and start all over grinding out what you want . I'd do it on a template first of any piece of flat metal before grinding the good stuff . Can you hollow grind ? Have you ever heat treated your own knives ? Or would you have to contact a heat treater ? DM

Very good points and questions. I can hollow grind only the very edge with the machine I have , other than that , it's a 1 " belt sander ( which is great for FG's or convex. )I haven't heat treated or anything like that ; only sharpening , removing serrations , minor grinding , etc.

I see that I would have to remove a fair bit of steel to get to a flat swedge. I probably would ruin it , from what you are saying.

If you want to have a 119 with a modified tip, and your method would take too much off...then why not start with a 120??? When you're done, it will be about the same OAL as a 119... ;)

Yes, thats it Trax . Which would still require some skill and the right equipment . DM

There was a pic posted here some time back of a snapped-off tip which someone (sorry; don't recall who) had ground into a stubby blunt kind of tip...It looked pretty good to me...I kind of liked the upturned tip, instead of the long pointed tip...:thumbup:

Might have been me Trax, after brother somehow snapped about 3/8 inch off the tip of this 470. I just went at it with the Lansky till I got tired of messing with it and it was sharp.

I think that was it, Packy...and i still think it looks pretty good...:thumbup:

Cutting back a 120 to a point like that would be...the bomb... :p:thumbup:

I think I could have thinned that curve a tad more, but it is definitely unique :cool:

Trax, I think I'd like that point better . I have one like that on one of my 119's and enjoy using it . There was a discussion here about finding this sort of tip on some knives back in 2008 where Joe posted in . It was thought those were factor received broken tip reworks . But mine was new ! So, as many of us know we see some strange unexplained things . DM
