Anyone notch their rifle?

Hey y'all, I was wondering if any of y'all put notches on your gun's stock for every animal you kill with it. I saw a guy on moonshiners (tv show) who had about 40-50 notches on his 30-30's stock. I've been thinking about doing this to my 30-30 as well. However, is there any "proper" way to do it or is there any way unwanted damage could possibly happen due to the notches? Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but my 30-30 has a lot of sentimental value to me and I definitely don't want to mess up the stock. Thanks.

I've never notched mine, but my friend T.A. DAVISON has........
He didn't do the stock - but hey who's perfect?:D
Like you said - I think how it's done, could be OK?:)

Notching your knife sheath every time you harvest a deer is a family tradition for me. Saves your stock too.

My grandpas old .22 he started doing it and I kept the tradition. Never really take large game because it's a .22 obviously but lots of beavers and smaller animals. I'm going to have to break it out and count the number, there's a lot.

No disrespect intended to family traditions, but I would never do something like that.

I've never really kept a rifle that long anyhow. I'd buy a rifle and by the time I'd see another one that I really wanted. I'd reload my ammo and I'd spend a long time working up a load that grouped well. I've thought about it, but never have really done it.
