I'm looking to get my first folder, and I love the look of Osbourne's Gaucho knife by Benchmade. I believe the blade is a bit different then the NRA version of the knife...instead it has CPM-M4 steel. Its extremely hard to find much info on this knife anywhitthis knife? Is it worth the $150+- price tag? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for the help

If you care what type of steel is on your knife then yes it is worth the money.
Great steel with a different design..

I own one of the knifeworks.com versions in CPM-M4.

When I first got it, I thought it was beyond fugly.

Not a tanto-tip or extreme-recurve fan at all, bought it more for the novelty of a new steel.

The more I carry it though, the more I like it.

I love mine. And it's made from CPM M4. A high speed tool steel. Probably the very best steel ever used in a knife blade.

Sharpening the recurve portion of the blade is no fun at all, but benchmade has "Life-sharp." So in the unlikely event it ever gets dull in normal use, they'll re-sharpen it. :)

I've got both 154cm and M4 versions.

The design is pretty good for most cutting jobs and I don't feel hindered by the blade at all. The M4 seems to behave pretty much like M2 so far, so that is a positive. The handle design is "good to great", so no issues there.

The price on these has dropped some, so I'd say the M4 Gaucho is a pretty good deal at the moment.

I just ordered one... I have high hopes. The blade shape looks like it'll cut really well for almost anything I'd use it for.

I bought two I liked it so much. I love the CPM M4 steel. I find it easy to sharpen, and it takes a great edge. I like the 710 better, but at the time I didn't want to wait. I bought one to use untill the 710 arrived, liked it, then bought another.

I use diamonds to sharpen and don't have a bit of trouble. It's IMO better than M2, which I really like. It can do anything from a pen knife, to a 10 inch competiton chopper. Good stuff. Right now, if I had to live with one steel for all uses this would be it. Vascowear, or o-1 used to be it.

For pure light to medium folders I still love ZDP ran hot, but heavier duty uses would have me chosing M4.

I like it better than 3V. It takes a real good edge like 3V, is almost as shock resistant while being more wear resistant.

It stains and corrodes fairly easy, which to some rules it out. Me? No problem. Joe
