I am thinking about getting one to test just for the heck of it. Has anyone actually owned a dark ops knife. I think their marketing is beyond dorky but I am interested in their quality and durability.

We have had one before I ever came here and read about all this controversy over the copy of Extreme Ratio and the way out there advertisement.
It's really a well built, very heavy duty knife that locks up with a 1/4" hardened steel lock back and it has a 1/4" thick very tough blade as well. It is held together by a huge pivot pin and the handle is thick aircraft aluminium. It's a good built knife and would no doubt stand up to much abuse. There was a picture here of a 185 pound man standing on the back of a D.O folder with the blade rammed between concrete blocks.
Think what you will about the brand we have around 80 nice knives and it's not the weakest by any means.

There is better steel, original designs and much much better blade geometry out there for equal or less money. I have handled them and was not impressed with fit n finish or the edge geometry. I'm sure they qualify as overbuilt but so do my ZT folders and they have great steel, better edge geometry and were designed by Ken Onion to be orignial designs. Just my 2 cents. Not trying to bash DO, I just think there are better brands to spend cash on. Now if you just have extra cash to blow then why not. Still ontario retribution, BM skirmish and the whole ZT line are as tough as you are likely to ever need and in my mind are a much better value if you want a tough knife.

One thing the handle inserts on the folders have these quartz granules embedded and while they give a great grip, the clip is right above and it's so strong and tight (you can't even get it clipped to jeans pockets) it would wear your pocket out in short order.
The entire knife weighs around 9 oz and the times I've carried it hiking it has gone in a huge sheath. When it arrived it wasn't really sharp as its got a thick edge. But it was pretty easy to get it shaving sharp. There's also some sort of bolt on the lock back that can be pushed over to keep it from opening till pushed back.
No it's not my fave knife but I suppose I don't hate it.
