Anyone play Go?

Its a sort of cross between othello and chess, invented by the chinese thousands of years ago.

I've always been sort of a chess fanatic so a friend of mine introduced Go to me over spring break and I sort of fell in love. It loses something playing on a computer though. Board games are just not as fun in 2 dimensions :D

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew of a reputable online dealer for boards and pieces?

I know the chances are slim because this game is sort of "out there" and kind of high on the "inaccessable ancient strategy board games" list but I figured it was worth a shot.

I figure one of my fellow knife knuts might have a comment or a favourite online dealer.

After alot of searching I found this store:
http://www.samarkand.net/
and I will probably give them a try if no one has any comments. The page looks professional and it had alot of details about what exactly your getting.

Thanks ! :)

I do but not very good. I guess I'm arround 18K.
Did you consider making your own board? I made mine, it's really easy plus it's fun. If you want I can give you the "official" size of the board & grid. Nice boards are quite expencive, if you can buy the wood cheap I reccomend you try to make it. For the stones, you can buy decent ones not very expencive. Try http://www.kiseido.com

I have some medium density fibre board left over from another project which would probably make a functional if not pretty board. I'd certainly appreciate it if you could post the official dimensions.

Thanks for the links guys, but I ended up ordering from the site I originally posted.

They had a VERY inexpensive "club set".

For 30 bucks I got a board painted on MDF(medium density fiber board) and a full set of 180 white and 180 black 6 mm glass stones + 2 plastic bowls with snap on lids.

I could of gotten nearly the same thing from the other two sites you posted but the first one doesn't seem to cater to inexpensive sets and the second one doesn't support online ordering and doesn't have the incredibly cheap MDF board.

When it arrives I'll let ya know how it is. It probably won't be very attrative but it was certainly cheap and if the site didn't lie it should be very durable, which is perfect for a college student. ;)

heres a link to the board and someone in their it mentions buy a set for 30 bucks.

You need a 17" by 18" wooden board with the grain running in the long direction. The grid is 27/32" by 29/32" center of the line to center of the line. The good thing is that you can find an nice 2" or 4" thick wooden board and make a super cool goban for really cheap (the price of the wood + the price of a magic marker + some transparent laquer). You do it like this: have the wood cut exactly to size and as flat as you can. Take some sandpaper and finish the surface smooth. Measure it very carefully and make very light marks with a regular pen so you can erase them easily (with sandpaper). Try your hand on a piece of scrap wood to learn how to get straight lines where you want them ;) It will take you a couple of hours to make all the lines. After you made the lines and the handicap points, you put a thin layer of transparent wood laquer. Voila, you have a thick nice goban :)
