Anyone read the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'brian?

I just started "Post Captain". It's the second in the "Lucky Jack" Aubrey series. I may go back and begin with "Master and Commander". Saw the movie and enjoyed it very much. My daughter gave me the first three volumes in the series for Christmas.

How about Hornblower? Sharpes? (I'm working on the latter series now - not great literature, but fun. Also really enjoyed the Flashman series - hilarious.

Great books. I actually like them better as books on tape, since I can hear how all the naval terms are actually pronounced and I tend to skim a little looking for plot lines when some of the technical things are in writing.

Also, Cornwall's Sharpe series is really good.

I'm a big Joseph Conrad fan as will as a sea story fan in general. I recommend "In Hazard" by Richard Hughes for an overlooked classic.

Great series of books, especially when read in order. For fans of the sea story, try "The Cruel Sea" by Nicholas Monsarrat, as well as his other WWII corvette stories.

i'm listening to them as audio books right now. I'm up to "Surgeons Mate" they are pretty fun. I had to skip The Mauritius Command due to some problem with my ipod :(

"Master and Commander", w/ Russell Crowe is one of my FAVORITE movies, so, I bought the first book. Loved it, though it was (I'm sure just for me) sometimes hard to follow due to the 'old english' style of writing/terminology... I highly recommend the movie.

I love the Sharpe series. I've read everyone that Cornwell has written so far, and I wish he'd get back to them. He's been sidetracked that past few years writing the series about the Danes invasion of England, and Alfred the great. I tried to read them, but couldn't get into them like the Sharpe novels.
