i dont know how or why but today i remembered a 'survival' knife test done by field and stream a few years ago when i was still very ignorant about everything knife related. they took 5 or so experienced survivalists and had them review the gerber lmf II, buck nighthawk, spyderco moran (bowie version), and another knife or two. they performed a few crazy tests like hammering them into a log with a sledge hammer along with using them for survival stuff. the lmfII scored highest, the moran just barely below it, and nighthawk and other knives got really bad reviews. i remember that they had nothing bad to say about the moran, it even survived the crazy handle tests while the lmf II broke in the middle...yet somehow the crappy lmf II took home the prize lol. probably because 420 or whatever they use is tougher than vg-10, and the lmf is a big blunt instrument, probably twice the bulk/weight of the moran. not to mention they like coated and serrated blades lol. looking back at those magazines, ive lost a good chunk of respect from f&s simply because they have pretty horrendous taste in knives to this day...although its by far the best tips+tricks magazine for hunting and fishing, lol.

The LMF really isn't a bad knife if you consider what its designed for, in that enviroment that particular knife is in its prime (almost, needs to be trapped in a cockpit too) I would say they picked the correct knives for the test, I am a bit surprised the nighthawk didn't do well, from all i've seen thats one hardy knife. That said, i'll probably never own a LMF, but the moran is at least a possibility since its less of a sharpened prybar.

Spyderco is always amazing me, look at the moran, then the lmf, and the thought of them both taking the same beating well is amazing. Gonna go get the pocket lint out of my delica and ponder its awesomeness. :D

I remember that article. It was titled "The Tactical Edge" in the February 2008 issue. I can't find the article online.

In addition to the ones you mention, there was a SOG. I left the issue in the men's room here at work but it only recently got recycled.

IIRC, the reviewers' main complaint about the Moran was that it was smaller than the other contenders. And lacked serrations.

Yeah, I was rooting for the Spyderco too.

not to mention they like coated and serrated blades lol. looking back at those magazines, ive lost a good chunk of respect from f&s simply because they have pretty horrendous taste in knives to this day...although its by far the best tips+tricks magazine for hunting and fishing, lol.
I got a free subscription as a promo when I ordered some mags from CDNN. At the time, I was trying to get into hunting and trying to learn a thing or two when I wasn't in the woods failing to get a deer. Once in a while I still end up on their forums following some google result.

My take after my year+ of readership: The writers, editors, and readers are a bunch of Fudds (not that there's anything wrong with that). The main difference between the readers and writers is that the latter seem to have a spell checker and a CAPS LOCK key that will turn off.

Sure, I enjoy Petzal and Heavey, but that's just how I see it.

I read the same article in F&S but seem to remember something a little different about the Nighthawk. It actually scored fairly well, except for the hammering part where it's rubberish pommel was scuffed up pretty good. Otherwise, it IS a stout little knife. I'm not a huge Buck fan, but, I give credit where it's due.
