Anyone see a sale on those small drill presses????

Darrel, Harbor Freight had em for $39.99. I'll go see if I can find the page.

Are these Harbor Freight drill presses pretty sturdy? Is there much play while you're drilling, and is the power decent? I've thought of getting one while it's on sale, but the price makes me worried about the quality.

I have a Ryobi that is the same model that I bought for around a hundred bucks about 5 or 6 years ago. It ain't perfect but it beats the heck out of bustin' carbide bits or tapping holes.

i have one of the harbor frieght ones. its fine, only 1/3 hp so i just put it on the slowest speed and take my time. i have gotten longer life out of the bits bcause i let it cool more often.

Check your local home depot, lowes, or other warehouse type home improvement store too. I have seen both a 12" delta drill press for about $180 and an 8" delta for about $80 at one point or another in both lowes and home depot. There a little more expensive but you get deltas quality. They really looked like nice drill presses. Both had a 2" boring stroke with an adjustable stop for different depths and a pretty good table on them. Pretty sure they were variable speed to.

Darrel-

I just received the link in my email that L6 put up there.

It's the little one like you said you like, for $40.

i bought one of those small bench type drill presses from harbor freight several years ago and it is still going strong. I have drilled holes 3/4" Diameter in heavy angle iron with it, and gotten it so hot you couldn't touch the motor casing, but did not seem to hurt it. The bearings gotta be cheap, and there is some slop in the quill, but is not getting worse with age and use. A really good chuck would do wonders but it's a work horse and well worth the money I think. If you do precision work, make folders, you would probably need something more precise.

I saw a bunch of them on ebay for all prices. Most are new for about 40.00 I use mine to tap holes for folders now. I just took the belt off and turn the pulley by hand. It taps very straight and is much cheaper than a tapping attachment of any kind.
