I bought a single blade doctor's knife with ivory handle scales, made by case...

It's been sitting in it's box, pretty much forgotten for the past 12 years-

I ran across it yesterday, and was awe struck once again, with it's beauty. It says mammoth ivory on the box, but when I tried to google it, I couldn't find anything.

I looked at images, and saw some similar, that were called mastodon, bark ivory?\

Was also wondering if it's still legal to sell ivory handle knives?

It was made in '03, but doesn't say "limited edition" or collector piece or anything on the box, but something tells me it must be a rare, special knife.

Can anyone shine some light on it for me?

Thanks in advance for your comments-

uhg- I can't figure out how to make the photos appear???

Hope it's ok just to post the links...

Mammoth ivory is generally not regulated in the same way as other ivory. It comes from fossilized mammoth tusks, and is generally legal to buy and sell.

I will add that "mammoth" and "mastodon" are essentially interchangeable terms. There were several species of both animal and they all lived around the same time and place. Although mammoth tusks are usually more curved than mastodon ones I don't think there's much difference in the appearance or quality and I wouldn't be surprised if material suppliers and knife-makers often interchange the two terms.

"Bark" means that it's from the exterior of the tusk. Bark tends to be more colorful and has more texture, inner pieces tend to be smoother and more creamy white.

Thanks for the comment-

I know that was the deal 12 years ago, but when I searched ebay for ivory case knives, to get some idea of what they are currently selling for all they had was "ivory quartz" and imitation ivory listings.

Even the sold listings are 100% void of any type of real ivory handle case knives, fossilized or not...

Seems a little bit odd

Just looked. There are a few mammoth ivory case knives on e bay and some other stuff with mammoth ivory as well. I just searched mammoth ivory.

Ebay doesn't let any items sell with Ivory if they find out about it. There are a few that slip by occassionally though. I had one with "imitation ivory" handles, and that Ebay removed my listing. With states being more picky about elephant ivory, it's making it tougher to buy/sell items with mammoth ivory.
