I did a search and didn't come up with it.

Talon hole ganza there. ????

Just a heads up and wondering if this has been mentioned before. And if we find a copyright infringement, do we get a free knife??? ;)

I think you deserve a free knife. I can't believe that is coming from Kabar and Becker who should know better.

Didn't see that, but I did see a broken BK9 in the becker forum. I'll stick with Busses.

Mr. Becker chimed in over there saying it was because he was chopping hemlock. He also mentioned that it took out a chunk of an axe that he was using. I don't anything about Hemlock..... anyone care to comment?

I chop up hemlock all the time with Busses, never had one chip out. I dented the hell out of Sarsquatch with frozen wood after I thinned it down to a literal scalpel testing the extremes of sharpness, but have never done anything else like that. Just last night I beat the snot out of my FBM LE against some large hemlock pieces, not a problem. I also batoned through the knots, nothing.

i don't think it's an intentional infringement. the remora's a last ditch type survival knife. looks like just one of 4 lashing holes. i hope.

Perhaps Ethan Becker asked for Jerry's permission before he came out with it???

Very likely. I doubt he'd intentionally do that, being a popular knife maker with a forum 1mm away from Busses here.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. I just needed to say that before people came on here and started talking about how Mr. Becker copied Jerry's talon hole. Then again, he very well could have. I think it's unlikely he would have done so without permission...

I saw that becker right before I saw this thread, the whole time I was thinking, my FBM would have handled that hemlock just fine, and then thinking in the very very unlikely case it chipped out, Jerry would have chimed in and said you got a new one coming now lets drink! ...instead trying to justify why it failed with hemlock horror stories. Everyone knows "stuff" happens, but seeing that becker, and having done that to some expensive knives myself, just makes me happy to say that Busse Combat is my home.

Im sure Mr. Becker didn't try to steal or copy with the talon hole, but it should be addressed out of respect for a fellow knifemaker.

I don't understand why you guys are griping about it.
I also don't know why that picture shows a talon hole. I just bought a Remora about a week ago, and it has only the other three lashing points. No talon hole.
Great little knife, btw.

Got a pic of yours? Please show it if you don't mind.
Maybe the pic used there in that link further up was on an unreleased proto before the change.

Sorry; I don't have a digital camera. If I can find someone who's got one, I'll snap a shot for you.
Mine looks exactly like the one in dawsonbob's link except that the fourth hole (the "talon" hole) is missing. The "bead-blast" appearance on the handle also isn't quite as pronounced; mine is much shinier and smoother than that one looks.
Forgive my ignorance, but what's the big deal with the talon hole anyway? I didn't know it was copyrighted or anything, which is how this thread makes it sound.

Edit: you're probably right about the unreleased-proto. I tried looking on a few dealers' sites to find a picture, and most of them say "image not available". Tomars is among the only ones I could find that lists it with a picture, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're using an older photo.

Copyrighted? No, but it is trademarked. :)

All right, at least I understand why everyone here is so antsy about it. It seemed like a really little thing to get upset over, and I couldn't see why a hole in a certain part of a handle was worth all the fuss.
Why is it trademarked, btw? It doesn't exactly seem like a major design breakthrough.

A little copying & pasting from another recent thread...

For many years we didn't mark our knives with anything other than the talon hole and to this day it serves as our only "mark" on otherwise sterile blades... snip

"A trademark is a word, name, symbol or device which is used in trade with goods to indicate the source of the goods and to distinguish them from the goods of others."..."Trademark rights may be used to prevent others from using a confusingly similar mark, but not to prevent others from making the same goods or from selling the same goods or services under a clearly different mark." (Found on LawMart.com)

ok, so it's not a design thing, but rather a way of distinguishing the maker of the blade? thanks for the clarification. and for being so patient. :)

Looks like this go headed off at the pass. Whew! I saw the stock photo on about a half-dozen websites with the talon hole.
