So, I saw that SOG will have a flashlight, the Strobe, for sale in the future. It's on their site. What do you all think about it? It should be pretty bright. If all goes well and the price isn't too high (since actual store prices are usually lower than msrp), it could be a good little flashlight. I'm no flashlight snob, so do any of you know, based on the specs, how it compares to similar priced/style lights?

I only saw the pic on SOG website. Seems to be a good light statistically. I dont trust Surefire after my experience I had with them. Dark ops lights seem to be a good bargain but the SOG is brighter and I believe it was an LED and had like 198 lumens and strike bevels which makes me want to put on the Xmas list. I cant wait to get my hands on one and test it out. It is great to see SOG diversify their products.

I don't want to start a bash or debate, but what happened with you and Surefire? The closest competitors to the Strobe seem to be Surefire and maybe Fenix, to me. I'd like to get a better quality flashlight than ones I have, I'm just not sure which one.

I got a G2 and I had it two days and I dropped it when going down a steep downgrade at work. It hit the dirt and slide down the approximate 20ish degree downgrade for about 15 meters. I got down to it and it would not come on. I thought it was the bulb so I bought another one and installed a new lamp with gloves so not to cause a burnout due to the oil on my hands and still did not work. I called Surefire and told them my story and the lady on the ohone said I must have been "abusing" it and they could not fix the light. I went ahead and got a 6P since I figured the aluminum construction would stand up to shock better but apparently the light had an issue with using too much power. New surefire brand batteries would only last 10 minutes max. I went through 4 different brand new batteries before I called surefire again and this time I got a very polite and knowledgeable rep who told me to send the light to them and they would inspect it and fix the issue I sent in the light and got it back with a couple new spare batteries they gave me and the issue still happened. I ended up selling the light to a friend who put it on his home defense gun. I bought a Dark Ops x4 which is a great and durable light but I want something with strike bevels and LED option so I cant wait to try out the SOG.

Wow, it sounds to me like you might have just had two rare experiences. I have owned two different Surefire lights, and both have done me rather well. The first I still have, but don't use all that much since the batteries only last one hour at 65 lumens. I upgraded to the LED model which has 80 lumens and 11 hours runtime. I have nothing bad to say about either one, or Surefire in general, other than the fact that they love their batteries judging by the price.

I'm interested to know, about how long ago did you have this issue? I'm wondering if it was something that happened early in the production of that light and they fixed it later... I haven't seen any with that bad of a run time. Not saying your making it up or anything, I'm just curious.

As for the SOG, I hadn't heard about this before, but if it has that kind of lumen output I'm going to have to look into getting my hands on one for sure!

Being a flashlight enthusiastic myself, I am not overly impressed with it, but I would say it is a decent light. Some things SOG missed out:

- Black anodized finish? HA-II or HA-III? (The benchmark for normal lights is HA-III)
- What LED is it using? Q3? Q5? R2?
- Is this light regulated?
- How many lumens for "low mode"? (Too high would not be good for map reading)

And other things... It is not released so perhaps SOG can tune up the things AND provide nicer pictures like the Surefire website. The pics show a very scratchy/flaky black anodizing.
