Anyone seen this new one?

So with other companies getting ready to introduce their new 2011 knives, I checked SOG's site to see if anything new was listed there and found this:

http://sogknives.com/store/FG01-L_Forge.html

I don't know if I like the wacky "hammered" pattern on the blade, but laminated VG10/420J2 with full tang construction is definitely what I would call a step in the right direction. People (myself included) have posted here on the forum that we want SOG to make a full tang fixed blade. Well, it looks like the Forge might be an answer to our requests! Tell me what you think!

I saw this knife in an issue of Blade Magazine. I enjoy the irony of the typo I found in the description of this knife on SOG's website...

The VG-10 san mai blade is hammer forged creating the distinctive pattern and the handle is precisely fitted using a stepped topo design for exemplary balance and feel. And because so detail is overlooked, the sheath is as good as the knife- crafted in Japan from thick rich leather, with a splash design stitched into it's face. A beautiful collectors item.

No detail except for spelling and grammar, apparently!

I owned one SOG, and the folder had a lot of blade play very shortly after purchasing the knife with moderate use. I think you're right, it seems like a possible step in the right direction, but I won't be picking one up for $300 any time soon...

J-Give the SOG fixed blades a shot bro, they are really good knives, the tech Bowie and Seal Pup Elite are both Hall of Fame worthy, imo.

I think it is definitly a step in the right direction. I really like the design of a lot of sog knives but AUS 8 just doesn't cut it. Vg 10 laminate is the way to go for a fixed blade in my opinion. Just look at what fallkniven has done with it.

It looks cool but I bet all those little grooves are hard to clean when stuff gets stuck in them. I also could do without the flowers on the sheath.

I hear you on both of those. To me, it looks like those grooves are manufactured into the blade, and I'm not sure why. I guess they're supposed to mimic hammer marks? Get rid of those grooves (and remove a step in manufacturing) and the flowers (remove another step), and maybe the price would be a little less, too! Personally, I hope this full tang laminated VG10 is a taste of more to come from SOG.

I just noticed something else; get rid of that SOG logo on the end of the handle so the scales can be made larger. They'd probably be more comfortable that way and there is already a SOG logo on the blade.

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to see this knife once it's released, I just hope they might tweak it a bit to make it better!

Maybe a step in the right direction, but I won't be getting one, and here's why:

Price - I'd buy it if I could get one for $150 I think
Sheath - Could do without the feminine looking flowers and crap (no offense to any ladies on bladeforums, by the way)
Handle - micarta or G-10 would be way better, not plasticky Zytel

Not really my cup of tea, so no thanks. The Kiku was nice but this one looks kinda off for something from SOG. Though I would have to say it is something fresh.

Would like more of the Agency or Creed type of knives coming out.

Well, hmmm, "ugly" was my first thought.
Quality-wise it might be the right direction.

I could buy a nice used dirt bike or an economical car for the price of these knives of which SOG has very little to do with making, at least it seems to me. For some reason they're also way more expensive than his (Kiku's) own companies knives are, although still extremely expensive IMO. If SOG had anything to do with the design of these knives it's sure hard to see looking at them because not only do they look the same as Kiku's knives but they're made out of the same materials. I just don't get it. I do love SOG though.

I am trying to buy VG10 laminate for making my own knives. It is very difficult to beat. I have a forged blade of carbon steel with the original hammer marks. It is a magnificent blade but is a tad hard to clean. I have had very few issues with Sog and find them excellent value. Never been dissapointed.
