Paul has three of my knives in S90V. At $80 per batch I am hoping someone else out there is sending some others in.

Hey Ron.. Steve and I were down there talking to Paul today.. He hated like hell charging you that much but he is actually doing it at a loss STILL..
He also went on the give me crap about all the LONG A2 blades I send him..:-) Paul does a hell of a job no matter what you send him, BUT you can tell he longs for the good ole days when it was all ATS and 440C!!!! Paul even introduced me to the NEW PAUL hehe.. This guy is the ONE Paul is grooming to take over some day.. Yeah RIGHT, like Paul Bos will ever retire!!!!! 62 and looks like 50 if that....

Hey Trace, ya I told Paul to go ahead and run them but he wanted to hold off a couple days. Don't know if he ran them or not. You know, the guys got to make a living. 2150 deg really tears up the elements in his ovens, plus he has to run the seperately. I don't mind paying him the $80, just was hoping to lower it a little.

Thanks for hanging on Sat. You know for guys like us (not that B head Steve:D) who have to make are livings at knives, it can be a real drag at times working day in and day out. But days like Sat, when we can let our hair down and just have fun, remind me of why I like knifemaking so much. BTW I am working on that IRC or ICQ or whatever the heck it is.

Oh, a rep from Crucible stopped by today. We got to talking about 3V and 10V. I think I am going to have to try some of that stuff out. He also told me about S30V! Now that stuff sounds unreal. No release date yet, but its only going to be about $13 per pound! Its supposed to have something like 15% free Cr after HT with the 3%V to back it up. Sounds like a steel to beat. Time to give Paul another headache;).

jerry hossom sent 5 blade to paul last week. he had a post here s30v lives. says it is no fun to grind. i am waiting to see a post on the finished product.

Paul was telling me about the new Stainless 3V,and how Jerry is ON IT...
THIS sounds like the $HIT!!! Same impact resistance as A2, better corrosion resistance than 154CM.... DAMN so what will we be using tomorrow?

Crucible is shipping S30V right now. I have to say, I'm really impressed with how they priced it, basically the same as 154CM! I should have some preliminary test results in about 2 weeks. I made two large (12+") blades with very thin edges. They're going to have to be very tough not to break. We'll see.

I'll continue using CPM-3V though. Even if S30V does everything it's supposed to do, 3V will still be the toughest production knife steel made. I'll also continue using 154CM, since S30V is at least as difficult to grind as 3V, so 154CM will be a good bit cheaper to work and is a more than adequate steel for most reasonable uses short of concrete work.

Reminder on working S30V, you need to run your grinder at about half speed or it will eat belts, even 3M's best. I found the new #967's at medium speed seems to work best. It saws easily and is just a little rough on drill bits.

Hey Jerry, how ya doing. I've got some S30V on the way. I have one question for you. Do you do any grinding before heat treating?

Thanks,
A.T.

For those interested, Phil Wilson has made knives out of the new stainless 3V and has been very impressed with the results so far, high ductility and edge holding, which is pretty much the intended goal. He has an article on it coming on in Blade.

I got my S30V the other day, and ground a small utility blade out last night. Jerry is right; it's not fun to grind. I used a brand new 3M yellow 36 grit belt, and I dont think I will get another blade out of that belt. I dont have a variable speed grinder, so mine is spinning at 3000. I didnt notice any extra difficulty drilling it though. Now, all I have to do is grind enough blades out to make it worthwhile to send out for heat treating.

Had the opportunity to work with S30V back in February. Some of CPM's preliminary or developmental S30V. After a few test and 6-7 months of use, I think you'll find it to be a damn good blade steel. As far as working with, it didn't seem all that bad today profiling there new stuff. And finishing the blades back in February didn't seem to be a problem either. It was only a couple small blades and one large one on different occations which makes it tough to tell with small or a limited quantity. Fun to come at 60 RC but don't think It'll be to bad, nothing like S90V. Good luck to all.

Grind true
