Anyone slip in to "Bizarro World" buying habits?

I'm not a huge fan of thick bladed knives. I've had them...sold them. I like scalpel-like slicers. I use an axe to chop.

Now...all that being said....I can't help but lurk around the Horton forum drooling over the massively thick pieces of steel he's grinding. I have little use for one and it doesn't even matter. I can't help myself which means it is only a matter of time before I pull the trigger on one.

Anyone just completely do a 180 in their buying habits?

Yup, I've mostly been buying and carrying medium sized slipjoints but I'm starting to notice how long it's been since I've had a Busse in my possesion and have recently been taking the "occasional peek" at the FS forum...;)

Sure did. I used to be in to hard use tactical folders like XM18s,Yuna etc. Then after a period of time I realized I get by better with a Mnandi or other lightweight scalpel type folder. For me the only thing I got from those thick bladed tacticals was extra weight to carry around, weird looks from people, and less cutting power. Now this might not be true for all but my needs don't require a overbuilt folder. In fact it hindered me in certain chores like opening mail or boxes, food prep and breaking down cardboard. Around the house I use a Case Swayback and it does a damn fine job.

EDIT I forgot to mention I carry a Scrapyard Son Of Dogfather in my trunk if I ever need a big knife. I understand big thick bladed knives have their place but for most of my chores a Mnandi or similar knife is enough so I tend to gravitate towards buying the knives I use more than those that get less use.

I started with lightweight 3" blades. Unfortunately I became disenchanted with the small stature and weight and since have moved to larger 3.4"< tactical knives.

Yep, I never saw the need for long blades, much less thick long ones. I've since tried out the Busse BWM which is long but not thick, and the Scrap Yard Dogfather which is both long and thick. They definitely have their uses in the woods and the back yard. Now I find myself thinking the ESEE Junglas would be nice to try out. Needless to say, my hatchet is feeling a little neglected lately.

I pivot back and forth between traditional slipjoints and modern locking folders. It gets dizzy, but the head rush is fun to ride out. I am thinking about a machete now.

Yep. A while back I decided I just needed to have a couple of daggers, so I bought a Gerber Guardian and a Mk. II...even though the rest of the time I really dislike daggers, aesthetics aside, and prefer a practical folder to a fixed blade.

I used top like all knives to be at least 3/16 thick, and wide. I now prefer 1/8 or less, and thinner. I can do a lot better cutting with thinner blades.

I went from smaller, 4 inch, fixed blades in the 70’s, to larger fixed blades in the early 80’s. I used a Buckmaster for several years, what a boat anchor! It was tough though, I never broke it.
I started working my way back down to smaller fixed blades after that. I was using 4 inch blades for the last couple decades. I swore I would never return to big blades. However, I have worked my way back up to longer blades again. I recently bought two knives that are around 10 inches long. They aren’t that thick, one is .250 and the other is 3/16. They are so much faster at chores like shelter building and brush clearing. I can do the same stuff with a smaller blade, but it takes more time and effort, and I get more blisters in the process. I still carry a small blade for intricate woodcraft and animal dismemberment, but they are in the 2.5 to 3 inch range now.
I am staying away from the massively thick choppers though, because they are too heavy for me to lug around. Those Hortons look crazy cool, but I think I’ll still use an ax to chop wood.

I wouldn't call it Bizarro. I started off getting into the Busses. Enjoyed them for awhile, discovered Horton Knives. Sold off most of my Busses and replaced them with Hortons. I'm not a big fan of thick blades either. But I just love all the machine work J puts into some of his knives. Sawbacks, blood grooves, etc. Cool knives for sure, easy to sharpen also. :)

I call it meandering through the wonderful world of knives.

I try to temper any expression of distaste for any bladed thing...eventually I will buy one and love it.

I switch around pretty regularly. In the past, I've looked down on tanto blades, chisel grinds, and "tacticool" knives in general. What's in my pocket today? An Emerson CQC-7, waved. And I like it!

Variety is the spice of life!

Ya,I flop around every once in awhile.I'll go from buying smaller, more practical blades to enormous bruisers.

Yep, I've done a 180 so many times I think I'm permanently dizzy!

Started with a bunch of us trading cheap barlows and other slip joints in grammer school.

Then in the late 70's while in high school I bought several Puma's and really though there was no better knife on earth. I also bought several Case's, and a couple of Buck's, and Gerber's.

I saw my first one handed opener in the early 80's at an REI in Atlanta, and bought it. Spyderco Endura. For the next 10 years all I bought was Benchmades, and Spyderco's.

Then in the late 90's I got back into buying Case knives.

Around 2000 I started buying mostly handmade utility type knives, and also a few Randall's, CRK's, William Henry's, and a few other brands. Also bought a few custom tactical folders.

In 2006 I started buying Busse knives, and bought many over the next couple of years. Also more custom utility fixed blades, and a few more locking folders.

As for now, the only knives I've bought in the past 6 months were custom slip joints, a few Case knives, and a couple of custom fixed Blades.

The future...I'm done! Only picking up one custom slip joint, and one fixed blade at the 2010 Blade Show.
Well, maybe I'm not done, but I'm trying real hard:p

I don't mind going through phases in knife collecting. What gets me is the models I keep going back to, fall in love all over again, and then dump at the first sign of something else I want.
