The barlow is obviously not the extremely popular design it was, but does anyone still carry one and use it?

I'm interested in one with good quality stainless blades, good edge geometry out of box, good construction, etc. Hardly any companies still make them; I think Camillus might still.

Any comments on barlows will be appreciated.

I really like the Barlow pattern, but these are the only two that I own. They were in a set given to me by my wife and they've never been carried.

Jim,

Go to the True North Knives web site and check out the Mel Pardue "Parlow". Now that is a barlow!

I don't carry a Barlow, but I like to buy them when I can. 1st Generation Bulldogs are awesome, but have carbon blades. There are some Schatt and Morgan ones that came out in, I think 1992, that are sweet as well. I believe they were made by Queen. Someday I'd like to have a Russell, like Phil shared with us. Don't see too many of those.

Muss,
You're right about those Mel Pardue Parlow folders. If I had a spare $775 laying around . . .

For a more traditional barlow check out this offering from Watson Knives:

Believe it or not I often carry an original Russell Barlow that was made (I think) in the 1890's (this is an educated guess since they aren't dated.) The blade has some wear, of course, and it isn't bright and shiny anymore. The scales show a lot of wear also. But the backspring has plenty of snap and the carbon steel blade takes and holds an edge well. It's a perfectly good user after doing service in it's third century of existence.

Fred:
That's cool that you are carrying a knife that's so old and yet so useable! It's amazing that a good pocketknife can be used and, with care, last so long.
