I was curious if anyone had stripped a Terror Monkey so as to know the finish it had under the coating. I'll explain more soon.............

I received these three on Monday, BBSHSH, Terror Monkey Steel Heart and a Marlowe Bulldog!

For those of you that like thin knives, this Terror Monkey SH measures .194" including the coating! It also has the special handle configuration, which makes it much more comfortable. I got it off the BF exchange from Strabs, you guys sure missed out on a great knife that doesn't come up for sale very often. As you can see, it is also narrower and shorter than the SHSHII, it is one fast knife and will be a great slicer, well balanced too! I was thinking of stripping it and adding a satin finish, it will still have the Terror Monkey logo on the back side, so it wouldn't loose its identity.

The Terror Monkey I assume is 3/16 stock. If it is then it was made using the Zero Tolerance blanks. I would bet money that the finish underneath is a bead blasted finish similar to the BIBB that I stripped.

Yes, it is .194" thick including the coating. I was thinking it was probably ground to that thickness so it wouldn't take too much clean up, that is why I was wondering if anyone had stripped one.

Nice score BTW. I was very tempted by that one.

That Terror Monkey SH is essentially a ZTSH with a slightly modified handle that is in between a regular Ergo and EU type handle.

I highly doubt that the finish underneath would be satin. One because the coating would not hold too well to a smooth satin finish. And two because...if it already had a nice flawless satin....then why coat it?

If I remember right...I think all of the Zero Tolerance blanks were Ergo blanks that were accidentally surface ground to 3/16 at the blanchard shop.

The finish underneath the coating on my BIBB was a medium coarse Bead Blasted finish. Not quite as fine as DC but still very nice nonetheless.

You can probably clean up the Bead Blasted finish pretty good using a coarse Scotch Brite. It would be a much longer and slower process than using a regular belt.

the finish is no different than the desert coated ZT's. All of the Terror monkeys I have had seemed to have a fairly smooth finish under the coating. The coating itself seemed quite thin and wore off easily on some. The handles felt a little too small for me and I like smaller handles so I moved them all.
