Hey, I have been looking at and considering the Battle Horse Knives "Big Jay" knife ...

I own a several Blind Horse and LT Wright knives and a couple Battle Horse now also ... so I know it will be of good quality ... but I haven't seen anyone post about it other than a sales ad ...

so I was just wondering if anyone had tried out one of these knives or handled one at all? ... I realise it is a big knife and my uses would be as a camp knife more than anything else ... here is a stock photo of the Big Jay ...

Just curious your thoughts if you have ... Thanks JJ

I can't comment on that specific knife but I can comment some on the design as I had something similar designed for me last year from a forum maker, but 5" instead if the almost 6" of this and in CPM M4. Blade heights are pretty much the same based on the spec on BHK's website. The design is pretty great for all around use but the height can be a bother if you're trying to carve some fine detail stuff if you need to get into the cut, mostly square notches is where I found it a problem.

The height adds a reasonable amount of weight for a given blade length but it does make it pretty decent for a little chopping action for getting smaller twigs and knots out of a stick like cleaning up a stick for a stake.

The big thing for me is the high sides make the blade nice to use kind of like a spatula for food prep or cleaning game as you can use the knife to push stuff around easily. It should also add a lot of durability inline with the spine since there's a lot of thickness in that plane but 3/16" isn't a slow for a little prying either, like prying out wood chips or shavings.

Mine has a convex-flat grind and edge and I think LT finishes his knives with a convex edge so I'm making a rough assumption that BHK might do the same since they used to work together. I think the high flat grind would be a bit slicier and the added length of the big jay will add to the chopping prowess and cooking tasks than the one I have as long as the length isn't unwieldy. The O1 should be a lot tougher too, of course, and should handle light batoning nicely if you need that to be done.

I think that will be a winner for a camp knife assuming you get a nice sheath to carry. The handle design looks like it's meant for some hard use with the contouring to lock the hand in there.

This Battle Horse is a high Sabre Grind which if isn't slightly convexed from the box it would be after I give it a touch up just to clean up the edge and make it pop ...

And part of the reason I like the design is the blade height and handle angle ... I have some bigger chopoers and a bunch of small to mid size knives for fine or detailed work ... but I think this would fill a spot between the two ...

its big enough to use to break down some kindling or even slightly bigger wood if necessary ... but still wouldn't be too big to use with food prep or detail work in a pinch ...

so I'm thinking it would fall in between most of my users and choppers somewhere ... the only other knife in that range I own is a CPK HDFK ... and it is an amazing knife ... and after I found out how useful it is I thought adding another in that range would be a nice addition.

Subscribing to the thread. I'm curious as well if anyone has one. I've considered buying it a few times and I've even went to the shop a couple times to hold one but i don't think I ever have.

I wish I could hold one ... I have a feeling I would buy it on the spot ... every other Blind Horse or LT Wright I have bought and the now Battle Horse Knives always feel great in hand ...

and they are designed to work ... simplist mostly but very comfortable and very functional ...

I hope someone that has experience with the Big Jay will chime in within a few days ... but unless I hear bad things I would venture to say it will be on my order list soon.
