Anyone tried letters with patina?

A buddy got me a new job. I was thinking of a new knife as a present for hunting as a thank you. I was considering something I could patina with maybe his last name covered in stencils so it would patina around it.

I have never done it before and was thinking a combo vinegar initial with darker mustard all but around the letters. Anyone tried something like this before? Pics?

I've seen it done but haven't tried it

One way that might work is to patina the whole blade to the shade that you want the letters then use nail polish or something similar to stencil out the name, when you darken the rest of the blade everything under the paint should stay the way it was

Might look at the above-linked thread^ for inspiration. He deeply etched some letters onto a blade using PCB etchant (ferric chloride), and his skill, techniques and methods are impressive, across the board.

A vinegar patina could work, although it may succumb eventually to fading and/or being replaced by new patina on a well-used blade. Most forced patinas don't go very deep, so they're usually not so permanent, if permanence is what you're hoping for.
