I was thinkin about getting my face/whiskers waxed cause my face is real sensitive. When I shave, even with an electric razor it leaves a rash on my face and my skin peels sometimes. I thought maybe having it waxed would be a better deal. Do that a couple times a year and no more scraping with razors. I don't care if it hurts, I can stand that. Just wondering if any of you guys have ever had it done to your face. Ummm, not interested about other parts of the body. :D

L6, it hurts. if shaving is bothering your skin, waxing is not the answer. Believe me it hurts. A large part of waxing includes ripping the skin's top layers off, too. did I mention it hurts? and it would be really difficult to do effectively on your face; too many curves, very small square footage.

If electric shaving leaves you with a rash, waxing will leave you looking like you have a ripe tomato on top of your shoulders.

You may wish to consider laser hair removal. That will also leave you looking like a ripe tomato, but at least once the swelling and rash subside, the benefit is permanent.

Laser might be the answer for you. If I were you, I'd go see a dermatologist, he will be able to help you out.

Hey Guys..

L6..

I'm the same way..

I only shave once a month because of it...

What about letting it grow ??

L6Steel,

If you choose waxing, remember; Take before and after pictures (for us) and preferably audio too :D

I dunno, L6. First a bidet, then waxing. Are you thinking about having any kind of "special" surgery? :D

I hate shavin', I've had my beard since I was 15, my wife's seen my naked face 4 times in the 27 years we've been together, once to go to court(didn't work the witness still identified me).

Once for a job interview(hated the job and quit 2 weeks later)

Once for fire school and then after it grew back I became part of a research group to test positive pressure Scott packs on bearded people.

Once to mess with my wife when she went to get some beer, she came back and my face was bald, needless to say she freaked.

Try growin' it, it keeps me warm in the winter and acts as an evaporator and cools me in the summer.

One last suggestion, find an old style barber and have him use an old fashioned straight razor on you.

If he can't shave you without irritation then start growin' and practice trimmin'.

My face turns a real mess pretty easily too. What works for me is this stuff called Shave Secret. It's not a shaving cream or gel, but an oil. (Get it at walmart. Tiny little squirt bottle, abt 1.5" high.)

Then I shave with the grain (ie, down). Doesn't get very close, but it still looks nicer to have a not-close (distant? sloppy?) shave, than lots of ingrown hairs.

I can shave every day this way, no problem. One day shaving against the grain with shaving cream and I'm a mess (yes, even with a fresh Mach 3).

Good luck!

All right bro, try this. I have the same problem that occurs if I deviate from my normal m.o.

Hang a mirror in the shower. Leave a razor there too. Use one of the razors with the lube strip.

When you shampoo your hair rub the same lather on your face. Wet the razor (and lube strip) and shave away. Can't see the mirror for the steam? Rub some of the lather on there too then rinse - no more foggy mirror.

Rinse off but for gawdsake don't go scrubbing on your face during the rinse. LIGHTLY towel off your face but, again, no scrubbing.

See if that doesn't work.

I use an electric razor and use cornsilk baby powder. It acts as a lubricant to the razor and lets it glide over my face without causing the irritation.

Laser might be the answer for you. If I were you, I'd go see a dermatologist, he will be able to help you out.

Agree with this, although its permanent. Adam Corrolo of the man show has a tough beard and had his neck done and swears by it. Its not cheap though.

Give this a shot. I have the same problem you do, once my beard started coming in heavy a few years ago I got bad ingrown hairs and irritation. Since I got one of these puppies and use 'Lectric Shave, I don't have ingrown hairs anymore. It doesn't shave too close but it gets the job done.

I'd suggest getting a regular set of electric clippers and using the #1 attachment on your face. You'll have zero skin irritation and a perpetual "three day" growth that drives the ladies crazy.

my dad also has incredibly irratable skin and he swears by shave secret from walmart since he found it a couple of years ago. he also uses it on his head to avoid the friar ring from the old cartoons.

i would suggest trying to grow it out and see how that works. if you absolutely can't handle it i suggest seeing a dermatolagist for a solution.

I have fairly dense difficult to shave facial hair as well. I find its best to shave AFTER you shower. For the last 5 minutes while you are in the shower crank the hot up a reasonable bit and close your eyes and look face into the shower head. Then Get out of the shower lather up face/neck with hot water and soap/shaving gel then shave in the normal fashion. This seems to work well, kinda does the same job as the hot towels that the old-time barbers used to use. opens the pores and helps prevent razor burn/skin irritation.

The wife of a friend of mine is a hairstylist/beautician, she says guys SHOULD NOT attempt to wax their faces. You can do a lot of damage just trying it. Male facial hair is much denser in concentration than other body hair.Lots more follicles per square inch. Wax there and you will have great pain and likely blood.

Thanks guys!
I guess I'll try the Shave Secret from Walmart and once I have it knocked down, go with the corn silk baby powder and an electric razor to see how that does. Never heard of that before. I knew you bastids could help me!!!! :D

How long did you try using the electric razor? I know that a lot of them these days require you to ride out the pain/irritation for 2 weeks or so until your skin gets used to the process. Not ideal, but everyone I know who uses one has said the same thing.

Another avenue to try may be the special razors that are designed for African-American men. I don't know the brands, I just know that in my local CVS' 'ethnic products' section, there are special razors marketed towards black men which claim to not shave as close. I think they basically just have more plastic guard around the razor so that you're not digging into the skin so much as shaving the hair at a slightly higher level. It will probably leave you with a five o'clock shadow, even after a 'fresh' shave, so I presume it's not the answer if your life requires that you be baby butt smooth. Still, it's something you could consider.
