Anyone try making a hawk from a splitting maul head

I have a couple of older spliting mauls that lost their heads. The lower portions of the handles (less about 6") are solid still, but the heads are still sittin on my bench awating a new life. Has anyone successfully ground off the excess metal (a lot of metal for sure) to make it to a tomahawk head? If so, how?

I've thought about forging a maul or sledge hammer into a hawk or axe before. But I don't know how to yet.. Some day maybe.

It would be a huge job either way. Grinding would be a forever job and forging would likely require a power hammer. But anything can be done if you put your mind to it.;-)

Seems like a lot of material for a hawk. You could probably split it and make 2 large Axes.

Any other uses /ideas for what to do with them? I hate to waste them. I though about maybe using them as small anvils. Actually I want to use them as paperweights on my desk at work, but......

I've been using one as a small anvil for a couple of years. I'm going to eventually get around to putting a new handle on it.

(p.s. They kind of suck as anvils because they rock back and forth unless you prop them up with something.)

Make your life a whole lot easier, and use a 24-36oz ball pein hammer head, you still get the full experience of forging and grinding....but you'll knock about 2 days off the project ;-)

You know, I've been thinking about doing the same thing. Not to make a hawk, but to make a big Viking style axe with a long beard. If I end up doing on I'll let you know how it turns out. I'll try to do most of it with a power hammer, but will have to draw down the skirt walls by hand and that's going to hurt on the shoulders I think.

I bought just what you are asking a couple of weeks ago but can't post pics. Mine is a Swedish axe that had the butt drilled and a pipe bowl threaded in. Dirty so I have not smoked, but feels really good in hand. I'll get pics up as soon as possible- I had a great hawk day that day.
