Anyone Try PM-V11 Steel?

Veritas is trying to promote their new chisels and wood planers made from PM-V11 steel, so they put up a website about it along with some test results. So, of course, the test results are very favorable. But I am curious about it, so I'm wondering if anyone has tried any tools or blades made from PM-V11 and what is known about this steel? I did not see a composition chart on the website.

I know nothing about this steel, but the graph seems flawed already.

Isn't A2 tougher than M4? (Crucible's image.)

Hi Nullity,

They're using a different test for impact toughness, so they get a different result. The test you mentioned uses the Charpy test, where impacts actually fractures a test sample. In Veritas' toughness test, they do not use Charpy. Instead, they see how much of the edge remains undamaged after chopping wood samples. For them, edge damage seems to include edge rolling. But a metal which is ductile enough to have lots of edge rolling is likely to be very tough in a Charpy test.

My guess is that these two tests are very different, and so may give very different results. I think Veritas is mainly interested in tests involving wood, because they make wood-working tools.

Ah, I see what you're saying.
The non-standardized testing and the lack of information is keeping my skepticism strong, but the results do seem promising.

If the steel works well in a chisel, it should be perfect for a pocket knife.
