Anyone try Prolong?

I have long used a good synthetic motor oil to lube my firearms with. Not only does it perform just as well or better than your average gun lube but a quart will last you a LONG time for $6 as opposed to traditional gun oils that cost that much for a couple ounces. Anyways, I got to thinking about Prolong. (For those of you who don't know about it, Prolong is an engine oil treatment that is designed to slow wear from metal-to-metal friction and slow corrosion by putting a microscopic film on the metal parts inside your engine.) I have used Prolong in every car I've ever owned and I swear by it.

So what I'm wondering is could the Prolong add a slight amount of corrosion resistance to carbon steels? I have a knife coming in O1 so it got me thinking on these things. Anyone ever try anything like that?

I've never heard of Prolong. I'm sure it will help with corrosion resistance, as it is probably mostly oil. If you're thinking the claimed microscopic film will remain on the blade longer than a regular oil film, I am skeptical. There is no reservoir of chemical (as an engine's sump) to replenish the coating after it gets abraded by cutting and working the lock. Plus, who really knows what those snake oil products actually do. Lucas oil treatment and Restore claim to do similar things in an engine, but there's almost no independent testing to verify claims.

It wouldn't hurt to try, but make sure you don't use that knife for food prep. Who knows what kinds of chemicals or heavy metals are in that stuff. I've thought about using some Boeshield T9, which is a spray-on corrosion inhibitor used in the aircraft industry (and adopted by hobbyists for protecting machined cast iron surfaces), but I don't want to forget I applied the coating and then use that knife for food.

And if that Prolong stuff smells like most engine oil treatments, well that would be a big downside.

Hm, good points. I definately wouldn't use this knife for food prep. It's going to be a bushwhacker. Maybe I'll try a test between oil and Prolong. I need to buy some anyways and an ounce or so won't make a difference to my car.

I'm with you Cutter, with a handle like Biggfatts and a potential "performance enhancer" it was not a hard stretch of imagination!!!
all in fun bud!

This thread is now underwhelming.

Me too. Does it make the blade longer and harder?

You should use bleach instead. It has a lower coefficient of friction than most oil base stocks (pure sarcasm). Any ester based stock would be better for metal on metal contact.

Hell, if you don't care about it being food safe, why not use some moly engine assembly lube? Or anti-seize? Judging from bolt torque values, either of those compounds will have lower friction than motor oil or lithium grease. Just use it very sparingly, and don't get it on your clothes (or your carpet...)
