over the years i've used the following
buck 110
case large stockman cv yellow scales {of course}
Buck 112
Bucklite, same as 112
that's pretty much it and they worked fine, no problems. Of course i suck as a deer hunter but i have helped clean quite a few deer and would have no qualms about using any of the above again.
Except of course at the junction of tang and bolster.
Last season I used a Gerber Fatty. [Good at slicing, but lousy at that first cut. Had to fall back to the SRK for that.] The big advantage of the Fatty with it's stainless blade was after the initial rinse, into the dishwasher it went. Probably wouldn't want to try that with a carbon steel leather handled Ka-bar.
I have always carried a folder for a back-up to my fixed blade for hunting. I carry either a Buck 110 (Alaskan Guide or BG-42 custom) or Spyderco Manix or Mini-Manix.
yeah, I always carry a folder when I am hunting. Most of the time when I am hunting deer it is a trapper of some sort, some times a case 6265, or a Boker copperhead. For small game I carry a medium jack, peanut, or trapper. Joe
I generally like a fixed blade for big game use & for general utility/possible emergencies when out hunting in the mountains (elk, mule deer, black bear). But have used a Buck 110 for goose hunting and wouldn't have any qualms on using it for big game field dressing too.
When hunting I've almost allways have a sheath knife with me but over the years I've field dressed several deer with a Puma Game Warden and also the Prince model, i've used the Buck 110 on a few more plus two hogs and many many rabbits. The Gerber magnum LST has been used for deer and butchering a bunch of chickens some one gave me, none were that hard to clean up as long as as you washed up as soon as possible after use
I carried this old Case a lot. It's been in a few deer and helped with an elk. I liked the fact that I had one blade for rough work around camp, and could save the other for the "moment of truth".
Most folks I know prefer a fixed blade. But I've used folders in the past on deer and elk.
An old brass framed Gerber Magnum Folding Hunter (back when they used 440C) did a few deer for me and an elk. My first deer was dressed with a Case three bladed Stockman. (It took all three blades to get it done, but it worked! )
I myself have always used fixed blades for deer hunting. I have used a Moore Maker trapper to skin a squirrel once. My brother carries a fixed blade and a lock back and has used the lock back a time or two.
