Hi guys and gals.

I received a Grohmann in the mail today and my first impression is pretty positive. The blade is nicely ground, tho it's not very sharp, and the handle is of nice wood and well fitted. The sheath seems to be of better quality than I would normally expect and is nice looking.
The one thing I don't get and this may be a dum question but what's up with the belt loop thing? How am I supposed to use it?
Anyone that has actually belt carried this knife care to enlighten me? I would sure appreciate it.

not sure what you mean. I know that some of them have more of a dangler style loop, so when you are paddling its easier to get it out of the way, I think...

The Grohmann sheaths incorporate a rather ingenious little loop that allows one to either wear it like a normal belt sheath, or 'unfold' the loop and use it as a dangler.

I think Grohmann knives are quite good for the money, and sadly overlooked by the bushcrafting/outdoor crowd outside of Canada. Part of it might be the blade profile, which seems a little odd until you use it for a while, but they are very capable knives, in my experience.

The unfolding to use as a dangler makes sense. I will try it both ways. I have looked the knife and sheath over a half dozen times this evening and I am still impressed. I'm gonna put it through the paces and see how it goes. I think I'm gonna like it tho.

I have a #4... and have to be careful not to accidentally cut the retaining strap... the #10 salt fisherman gets a little more use

I find the stainless steel blades a little soft. Tested one at RHC 55 once. Maybe this is why they dull easy but sharpen fast. I like the feel of the #3 in the hand and the military sheath is very practical.

I had heard that there stainless was a little on the soft side. How would it compare to say Victorinox's stainless? I haven't sharpened mine yet but used it last night to slice up a watermelon. I really like the shape of the handle and the offset blade. Really gave me alot of control, I can see how it would be a good design for cutting meat.

On another forum I saw a post with some major damage due to some standard wood cutting, so the steel did look pretty soft. Since Bark River has similar knives, in 3V, well, I never saw a reason to get one.

what is the #3?
the #3 is a bit bigger than the #1.

The handle is too small for me on the #1 if I use it for very long I get cramps.I've had it for twenty plus years. It did it when I had young hands its worse now that I have old man hands.
