They look pretty handy, stronger than a wire-saw, cut faster than a folding saw !

I never really hear them mentioned though ?

Pit, I use one all the time. I started carrying the saber saw (which is basically a chainsaw blade with handles) when it first came out and I was in the military. Our 1st Sgt gave one to every member of the squad that won the first war game of the year and fortunately my squad won. I like the original saber saw pretty well but it is fairly wide, heavy, and only cuts in one direction. Now I carry the pocket chainsaw. Its thinner, light weight, and more easily stowed if you ditch the plastic handled and put web loops or 550 cord loops on it. It also cuts much faster, and in both direction.

This is the original saber saw

And here is the one I carry now (pocket chainsaw)

I actually have one in each of my trucks, (in the survival kits.) It actually came in very handy this past winter. I live in a remote area. My road amounts to a mildly improved logging trail. We got hit with a pretty good snow storm one day, and on my way home from work, I was plowing my road and came across two different fallen trees. Each one was completely blocking the road. (They were about a 1/4 mile apart.) So my choice was to hike about 3/4 of a mile up the road in about 2 1/2 feet of snow, to my house to get a chainsaw, or to try my saber saw. Anyway, it worked beautifully and I was able to clear my road and enjoy a good steak when I got home. I won't be without it.

I sell both, but I'm a little partial to the pocket chainsaw. The military version is smaller, lighter, and still works pretty well. I guess when weight doesn't matter either one is fine. Here are a couple of my videos that might help you:

Thanks for the input guys, gonna have to look at adding one to my kit now !!!

I've got a pocket chainsaw too, though I've never really had to use it. I have it in the car emergency kit now for the same reason Junkyard does. We were on a roadtrip once and came upon a fallen tree on a remote road; if I had the saw then, we probably wouldn't have had to backtrack and waste time finding an alternate route.

I think for hiking/backpacking I'd rather go with a folding saw because you can saw with one hand and use your other to stabilize, or not use it at all if it's injured. But I don't really saw much with the activities I normally do, so I can't say for sure.

The nice thing about the pocket chainsaw, as pointed out, is the size. It's very compact. When I used to carry it in my pack, I ditched the plastic handles and added paracord loops to mine as well, you can just use stout sticks for improvised handles. It is relatively heavy though, definitely not an ultralight item.

Pretty cool that you can sharpen the Sabercut like a chainsaw

I love sharpening chainsaws.
