I'm looking for diamond sharpening rods with a handle. Preferably 600-800 grit. I have a Sharpmaker, but I want something with a handle, and that can accomodate larger blades, so 10" or so.
The DMT Diamond Steel looks good- anyone have experience with them?

I was house sitting this summer and after checkign the edges on the Henkels, I wondered how these folks kept their knife edges in good cutting order. Later I spotted the DMT steel when getting a spoon. Nice and long, cut fast, put an aggressive edge on. From that experience, I'd say go for it.

Hey Karl...

God your a phucking snoop!!!

Remind me not to let you sit my house...

Geee Dear,, it's funny all 200+ of my knives were such a mess before we left,, now they are all neatly organized and smell of oil!

I think Karl was in my shop!!!!!

LOL

ttyle

Eric...

Most of my knife sharpening is done with an Eze-Lap rod usually 1/4" x4" rod . Diamond will sharpen anything including carbides drill s. It only takes a few light strokes, if you bare down you will remove a lot of material.

Hey Eric, ya bastid! I wasn't snoopin! I was getting a spoon!

And you are welcome for cleaning, oiling, and organizing your knives. I hope you liked the way I tidied your shop too :D Just don't ask what I did with your tooth brush

I have a 12" DMT EF(1200 grit) and it's great, maybe a little big. I think it was about $20, and you can get them in 10"+ handle. They also make a coarse(320?) and a fine(600). Beware that they eat steel readily, so consider the EF unless you want to reprofile every swipe. A burnishing steel, then DMT, then an extra fine ceramic steel(~1500) takes less than a minute for shaving sharp.

HOLY MACARONI!!!!!!!!

I JUST REALISED THAT KARL IS CRAYOLA.........D'oh!

DMT's are fancy fantabulous.... "Diamonds, gloriouus glorious diiiaamonds"

And now you must be killed aaron! Hehe, see ya in chat buddy!

Diamonds are a guy's best friend too. We are just more creative than women. They want a rock stuck on a ring. We want fine powders of varying size attacked to rods, flat plates, grooves, etc. Men are quite sashionable when it comes to diamonds :)

I've had all positive feedback from my customers that have purchased the Hewlett diamond sharpeners. They are well made with ergonomic synethic handles with a large guard for safety. They come in several different lengths, up to 12". My favorite is the 3 sided with coarse, medium and fine grits but it's expensive. The oval 2 sided fine is really all you need in the kitchen unless you let the blade get in bad shape.:)

Yes.
I have the full range of DMT rods (folding handles) and the flat stones. The rods are the best way I have found to sharpen recurves, making the job very easy.
The flat's are indespensible when sharpening or profiling especially Paul Bos treated blades (ty-wrapped to the TriSharp rods).
The rods are light and compact and perfect for when you are travelling, in the field ie away from home.
The fine DMT's feel as just a hair more aggresive than the TriSharp fine white rods.

I have 10-inced DMT fine grit (red) diamond steel and it works excellently on my kitchen knives, the best of them are Fallknivens with VG-10 blades. Really way to go!

For me the best diamond rod is made by Ultimate Edge.I believe they were the original makers of the oval or "cats eye" style of diamond rods.It can sharpen serrated and straight edges.

If you happen to send out FREE samples (I'm too darn poor to buy anything new :(), that 3-sided one sounds VERY useful...(Heck, I wouldn't even turn-down the 2-sided oval one, 'tho :D.).

Google, DMT.......more hits than I can count on two hands. Choose the nearest to you. Not trying to GAF you off. Is you best way to find what you want, same as I did.
Have fun sharpening :)
