You know, you have the odd knife that didn't come with a sheath. You want something quick and easy that cost nothing. Cardboard and duct tape is a classic. I've also stitched some out of juice cartons. I was thinking of using garden hose or vinyl tubing, but they have a curve in them. Anyone else cobble up a sheath on this forum? Show us if you can!

Not so much a "sheath" but I have shoved a knife blade between the pages of a phone book then rolled up the phone book slightly and wrapped it with a couple rubber bands. Did this for transporting a chefs knife that I re-profiled and sharpened for a friend.

I got fed up with a lot of the factory sheaths I had , so I got into making leather ones myself a year ago. I figured if you're going to improvise , might as well do it with leather.

I wasn't trying to make works of art ; just functional , strong sheaths. It's not too hard and I just taught myself mostly from reading on the net. Besides , they usually work better than other materials as you can fit them to the knife. For the time it takes to make it out of cardboard, milk jugs , and duct tape , you can make a leather one. Just sayin'

Here is one for my Esee 3 and Spyderco Bushcrafter. They where my firsts and took about one day each. A year later now and I can do it in less time.

Yea, when I was a kid. I saw this Bowie style knife, at western auto, that was almost perfect. I bought it (4bux), broke the fake stag cheap plastic scales off the full tang an made a new handle by wrapping duct tape around it (not as ratty as it sounds, there's more to the duct tape wrap). Then my mom helped me make a sheath out of some sheets from the base. I don't know where the Air Force buys their sheets, but they're pretty durable. I set the "sheath" up for IWB carry. That knife was both my thrower and my edc, for a long time. Now I just press kydex and secretely hope every knife I order comes with a lousy sheath :-D

Yep I improvise them out of leather most of the time, kydex some of the time and i've used odd materials as well. Used some firehose material for one once, worked better as a belt. Here is one I made a few weeks ago for a esee6.
