Earloer today I used a block plane to take the sharp edge off a Lomg piece of wood that I ripped and I made some real nice curly shavings and a light bulb turned on in my head...these would make great fuel for a fire!

I wouldn't carry a heavy cast metal plane in my pack but there are a few very light weigth mini block planes that I might consider bringing next time I head out in the bush. i'm thinking some like the tiny Stanley 12-101 trimming plane. There ate also some nice cute wooden japanese planes that would be easy to carry.

Does anyone use something like this in the woods or for bushcraft?

I've seen people use pencil sharpeners and twigs to create the shavings you're talking about. Albeit, probably not the same size; but the same concept. Personally, I just use my knife if I need shavings. I usually have three options to choose from on my belt or in my pockets. A small hand planer may be a good option if you have the space for it, and isn't too heavy. There's no reason an individual can't be creative with the tools they possess, and I believe that.

That's funny...I thought about the small pencil sharpener the other day. Always makes great curly shavings and weighs nothing.

a block plane would be a great idea for anyone with limited finger strength, or if you suspected that you might loose fine muscle control. the hard part would be keeping the blade safe, and accessible. if you are relying on it for use with cold hands, but have to adjust the blade with a thumb screw.... OR carve a block that fits your knife as the plane blade! a massively over-complicated solution to a problem none of us had. I'm on fire.

A blade of a short Stanley Surform like is used for sheet rock work
A great carving tool
Lots of fine shavings

I still have the rounded short blades, are they still made?

I think you just hit on an idea for making tinder for starting fires in my fireplace. Keep a few 2 x4" or odd pieces of pine lumber in the garage and when you need some tinder, create some shavings.
