So I screwed up my computer last night and had to reinstall windows. Thus I lost a hole bunch of crap. I don't have my Microsoft office cd anymore, and I cant figure out how to copy it off my old computer. I found this website called openoffice which is like a free Microsoft office. Does anybody have any experience with this?

I use it without any problems or issues.

OpenOffice is wonderful. The only issue some people have with it tends to deal with the "excel" and "powerpoint" conversions, as they don't handle them completely yet. The word processing functions wonderfully though. It's a nice open-source alternative to the Office Suite and will handle most tasks just fine. However, just make sure that if you're planning on e-mailing yourself documents for viewing elsewhere, either save a copy as a win97/xp format or export a pdf version. By default, it saves it in its opensource format.

I use Ubuntu Linux as the primary OS on my work laptop (no, I'm not working in anything relating to computers), and use Open Office on my laptop, as well as on my Windows Vista64 desktop. My fiance also uses it on her Macbook.

Works perfectly well on all 3 major platforms.

I use NeoOffice which is OpenOffice for Mac and I think it works great. With that said if you are an Access or Excel power user than you may find it slightly lacking but for all of my day to day needs with work it is great for me.

My two kids use it at college.

Only problem was once with a particular macro on Excel.

Otherwise, great.

What he said about Excel.. I had problems in the past with OpenOffice but only when using Excel files , otherwise I think it's great.

Open office is great unless you need advanced Excel capability. kind of like MS office for mac

It works as advertised!

Which is far more than windows ever did, when I bought a new laptop with XP on it to do the 1st year of a qualifying law degree course.

You can also use Google Docs. It's a little more barebones than OpenOffice, but gets all the jobs done that most people need.

It's online though. I think there is a beta feature to take it offline, but I can't speak to that. A couple of the nice things about your docs being online is that you can access them from any internet capable computer with a password, and likewise you can enable collaboration and sharing with other people. So say you're' working on a presentation with a few co-workers, instead of all sharing the same computer, you can all work on the same doc, and see all changes in real time.

I'm not sure I would recommend Google Docs to someone who doesn't have a broadband connection, so if you have dialup maybe find something else.

There's actually quite a few office suite applications available. Nowadays, OpenOffice comes standard on most linux distributions, and I've heard good things about IBM Lotus Symphony, which, I believe, is freeware and, just like OpenOffice, available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

I like it so far. It is a little different from MS Office and that takes some getting used to. I find it to be very capable.

You can find the downloads for whatever type of Microsoft office you have on their website; so long as you have the CD key from your old version you can install and authorise it like normal.
