Anyone use the mousepad trick?

I use it with sandpaper up to 2k and get a mirror edge every time. Anyone else use it?

When I started out, I did the mousepad.

I have moved on to a harder backing (dense rubber backing).

Of course, I cheat now, because I have a belt sander.

I do on some knives. It depends on the edge I want, but yes I do use that method. Edge comes out convex and screaming sharp. Sometimes I'll use a thick phone book. It gives a little less than a mousepad.

I drape the wet/dry sandpaper over a leather strop. Similar results.

I use sandpaper on glass, works great : )
